I once when young caught a 5lb+ Kokanee near Kokanee Creek on the Kootenay River West Arm. It wasn't the biggest caught that year. If I remember correctly the largest recorded at the time was around 8 lbs, but I don't think that was taken on a line rather it was picked up in a spawning bed. It around 1965. Apparently in 2010 a 9.67lb Kokanee was caught in Oregon.

I remember once hearing a story about some passengers were riding on a bright sunny day in July across the Balfour/Crawford Bay ferry. There were a lot of Kokanee "playing" by jumping as they frequently do. A passenger with a "drawl" said to the Canadian passenger that was near him, "Hey y'all, how big do the fish get in this here lake?"

The Canadian held his hands out about 10" apart.

The other passenger scoffed, "Ahh heck them is just bait fish where I come from."

The Canadian said politely, "Yes but we do measure a little differently here in Canada than you do. Up here were measure between the eyes."

Really CS,
I have weighed hundreds of 5-35 lb springs i have caught. I was a guide on the west coast of the island.
Spring salmon? river caught and released? PURE Speculation 40+ lbs I have pictures but no scanner sorry.

Steelhead you release,,,, so estimate?? based on formula ( Which is a common formula for steelhead) 30" fish = 10lb,,,, i have put tape on 35" fish.

Halibut my self only small ones never weighed 30-40??? lbs

Coho? again i cant say at all.

Cutties, loads at around 20"
Rainbows the same
Browns 5-6 lbs est guess

Really, Everything i catch pretty much goes back, and i just dont weigh them. After growing up on a boat i dont eat them. I dont fish much for other people anymore, and the compitition between my Wife, Father and I is all for fun and the only competition i go in now. I dont mean to sound like im "Tooting my horne" It is just so long ago my life was absolutly drouned and surrounded with fish both Commercial and Sport. So a big one today is just that "Todays nice fish" one that i hope is bigger or better then my lovely wifes!

Personal Best: 1,400 pound Blue Fin Tuna. 12 miles Offshore the Eastern US / Canada Border, back when those Giants still existed. Also tagged a 750 pound Blue Fin the same day. Today unfortunately, the largest seen most seasons rarely approaches the size of the smaller one we caught that day.

Guided Spring: 66 pounds, on The Sawtooth, 16 year old Young Gun's FIRST ever spring! Awesome!!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Tracks/60lbs_2.jpg

Best Personal Spring: 56 pounds, outside The Gap at Nitinat.

Best Guided Halibut: 264 pounds - Meant to cut it free, but the Client (a Boxer from England with mitts the size of my head) demanded otherwise. Took everything we had to haul it over the stern, and required a hyab (in Port) to remove it.

Best Personal Halibut: 88 pounds

Best Guided Coho: 28 pounds - Southbank - to my Father. Now mounted and proudly displayed in his overly HUGE Man Cave.

Best Personal Coho: 25 pounds 13 ounces - Stamp River, BC

Best Personal Northern Pike: 56 pounds, McKenzie river, NWT.

Best Personal Inconnu: 71 pounds, McKenzie River, NWT.

Best Personal Arctic Grayling: 5 lbs 3 ounces, Husky Lake tributary, NWT

Best Personal Arctic Char: 31 pounds 6 ounces, Mouth of XXX River, Victoria Island, NWT

Best Personal Lake Trout: 71 pounds, 2 ounces, Husky Lakes, NWT

Best Personal Steelhead: 27 pounds 11 ounces, Bogachiel River. 32 pound Spring run Spring same day, same gear.
Largest Steelhead Observed: 33 pounds 4 ounces - Likely Thompson bound, Yale Canyon, Fraser River, BC - Fishwheel

Best Personal Sturgeon: Weight unknown, just over 13 feet in length, Yale Canyon, Fraser River, BC

Best Personal Brown: 11 pounds 13 ounces, Lower Crowsnest River (before the Three Rivers Dam), Alberta. 4x tippet!
Largest Brown Observed: 31 pounds 4 ounces - State Record Fish at that time, My Uncle's (I was in the boat) Flaming Gorge, Utah

Best Personal Rainbow: 19 pounds, 3 ounces, Piprell Lake, Saskatchewan

Off the Beaten track...

Largest Salmon Shark: Guesstimated at just over 400 pounds, targeted fishery, Malcolm Island. Tagged & Released. Recaptured and additional tags applied twice over 4 years.

Largest Exotic: 42 pound Goliath Tigerfish - Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. Rumored to reach in excess of 100 pounds in the same system. These are incredibly FUN to catch, but WATCH getting any part of you near their Business End!! Not my photo, but shown here to indicate why:

LOL! Oh, there's a handful to go yet methinks! Working on them one at a time...

"Like" fishing is a bit of an understatement! Became a Marine Biologist simply because Wildlife Biologists have to work (EEK!) through most of the hunting seasons, obviously NOT a wise choice for me! Kinda like getting paid for doing what I would have paid for, and certainly allowed me a LOT of opportunities. Only ONE thing I like better, but we can only hunt so many months of the year, whereas fishing is a full time occupation! Now I fish commercially (WCVI troller) and guide in the chuck. Certainly a GREAT way to feed the addiction!
