Took my dog out for her first duck hunt last week with cavebear, made out alright came home with 2 ducks shy of our limit and a goose, mostly teals, but fun none the less. I thought I would have to show her the ducks flying in so she would know what we were there for, but she was a natural at that part, took a bit to get her to pick them up, but by the end anything hitting the ground she brought to my feet for a treat, still working on the water.

I'd love to be shooting limits of teal this time of the year. These greenheaded park ducks can get old after awhile.

Good eatings!

That's great. Did she bring in the goose ? Do you do any retreiver training at home or all instinct? Nice lab !

Thanks, I have been working with her for the last year, took her out grouse hunting lots, never had to much luck finding many, what we did find she flushed but they hit the christmas trees before i could get a clean shot, but she has great instincts for both upland and water fowl. The goose was a little big for her, she's not a huge lab, but i'm sure with work she can do it. The ducks never smelled fishy at all, I have ate them from the area before and mmm good eats.

well today was the last day of the season for us, we been out 6 times all together, she's coming along very well for being trained by a guy that really has no clue:) I got her swimming, just not swimming to get a duck, she will go out to just before she has to swim to get them, so getting better. Not a huge fan of them when they are still kicking, dead but the nerve twitch, but she's good a finding the wounded ones hiding in the grass, our last day ended well with 7 in the bag.

The best lab I ever had started his first season by going in to his belly and barking at the downed birds. Took him swiming with me next summer and that was it never lookrd back hunted for 13 yrs.
