I was up bowhunting today and found a whitetail shed. It came off a buck that visited my game cam quite a few times. He is totally nocturnal and came by my cam on Dec. 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17. I can't believe he dropped bone already. He last showed up on my cam on Dec. 17. He's not a monster but is a pretty good buck as he is a 6 x 5. I found the left side which is the 5 pt. side. I looked around for the other side but no luck. I'll go back and look some more. Maybe he'll show up on my cam again. Anybody else see any sheds yet?

Yes I have pics. of the buck. I'll have to try and see how to resize them as I have a new Apple computer and don't know how yet. I will have to take some pics. of the shed too and try and post it along with the buck pics.

if his testosterone levels have dropped, then he will drop his antlers, either he is a older buck, or there are no does that he is interested in:)

Your mac came with iPhoto. Export (in the file menu) the photo as a jpeg and keep the image size around 400 Kb.

Whities often drop in early january, even late december is not unusual.
Ive actually picked up a fresh muley shed at this time of the year in the past.

Dont even want to think about shedding yet, I just finished hunting today!!!

Not totally out of the ordinary to find a shed in December, but I would believe most bucks will hold on for a few more months at least. Moose should be loosing right about now though.

X2 Marc is correct it is not unusual for WT to drop there head gear now I have heard of storries hunters shooting deer in early Dec then grabbing onto there antlers to drag the deer out and the antlers come off.

Picked up a brown Moose paddle Dec. 3rd this year. Over the years, I have collected many W.T. sheds in Dec. One of the sheds that I posted that looks like doubled's buck was picked up Jan. 1st. Many years ago I watched a large Mulie bangin a doe at the end of Feb. He only had one antler. The other 17 bucks in that group had all shed. In all the deer family it is normal that some of them are carrying their headgear 2 months later than the first one to drop. I have seen this with large and small bucks and bulls. What I find interesting is that they all seem to strip their velvet and brown up at the same time ( within a week or two ).

Nice shed. I have found a few new sheds in Dec including a huge 55" moose set beside the hiway in a snow bank about 4' apart on Dec 10 . The mule set in my avitar were found late Dec 2 days apart in the same area. I also know of a decent moose shed found at the end of November this year in the peace region. I have also found a couple fresh caribou sheds before the new year as well.

The shed drop pic tells it all I see the squirrels have been at that shed already.

I don't see any squirrel marks on the antler. There is some scarring on the antler where it looks like the buck was battling or locked up with another buck. It couldn't have been on the ground very long as this buck showed up on my game cam with both antlers on Dec. 17th and I found his shed on the 20th. I checked my game cam yesterday and saw a another buck with only one antler and it was a pt. whitey. Here's the pic. and also another pic. of the 6 x 5 on the 17th.

I was not referring to the buck with the antlers I was talking about the shed it looks like some chewing on the tip of the G2 ??? the antler shed in the snow

The shed antler is from that same buck as pictured earlier and the G2 is broken off at the very tip, most likely from battling with other bucks.

I use 4 tree steps to get it up between 10-12 feet above the ground. I have it in a lock box and made a bracket to lag bolt it to the tree so I can angle it down at the game and keep it above human eye level.

Very surprised that he dropped it already..They say the bigger the buck and antler, the sooner they drop em, as their rutting hormones kick in sooner in the year than the younger bucks..

hunter1947
12-22-2012, 11:57 AM
There is all kinds of reasons why some deer or elk will cast there antlers sooner then others ,,could be weak ,hurt ,old ,or lackage of food etc..

Picked my mount up yesterday and hung it in the new shop. While I was at Harley's, he mentioned a story of a bow hunter that shot a nice 6x6 whitey and when he went to retrieve it, it lost both his antlers in the fifteen minute wait and scramble. The hunter found one that day and then went back with a rake and found the other on top of a six foot rock somehow. Ripley's believe it or not!!!

Harley is tanning the hide and he will be doing the head mount for me. Harley was partly right... but the antlers I retrieved were 9x8 and not 6x6. Still working on my story... but it is coming... :-D
