I can't answer your questions, but I was in Maui this year and all I saw for game was some wild goats and some loose chickens roadside. I think the locals BBQ roadkilled chickens for the tourists and call it huili-huili?

Have never hunted there but saw axis deer near la perouse when I was there a month ago. I understand that there are blacktail deer on Kauai. There seems to be a few of guide outfitters to choose from. Can't wait for pics and a story. Good luck.

You do not need a guide, but you do need a local license which is pretty cheap and relatively easy to acquire. On Maui there are Hogs, Axis Deer, Turkey!! I would want to go with a guide so as to avoid tresspassing and to increase my odds of a successful hunt... a two week vacation could get burnt up pretty quickly just out hiking around. You might consider trying Molokai and Kauai too... lots of hunting there and far fewer people. One of the local guys told me they have 40,000 pigs on Kauai alone! Next time I go I'm going to skip the diving and go hunting for sure!

My step dad said he went on a guided traditional style boar hunt. I can't remember what island he was on. But he's been known to tell more than a his fair share of stories.

Very intriguing this Hawai'ian hunting talk, go for a hunt in the morning, and enjoy a fresh pig roast that evening and throw back a few Kona brews...

There is actually quiet a variety of game on the islands, Deer, goat, sheep, wild cattle, turkey, boar

We were there last Dec and I was talking to a local about hunting and he said our best chance for axis deer would be on Molokai. Non resident hunting sounded reasonable price wise.
Even the guided hunts are reasonable enough for the average guy. I didn't hunt but I know I would leave it as an option on the next trip.

Hey Darkside, I was on the big island (Kona) in February. I looked into doing some hunting there. Actually quite a variety of game form upland birds, turkey, wild cattle, deer, pig to an assortment of goats and sheep. The rates were real reasonable where I inquired, around $700 for a goat or sheep hunt (Parker Ranch) with trophy fees on top. Definitely going to make it a priority next time. Never looked into itin Maui but I do know there is similar hunting to the big island. Check out the Kuiu website, they've got some island bros hunting on there, including pro surfer Shane Dorian. Anyways excited for you and good luck!
