Well that's a great thread topic,
I was asking around and like usual it's a very debatable topic when talking calibers, most seem to recommend 22-250 or 223 so I had my heart set on a Sako A7 in a 22-250 until............................................. .............................. I just found out Weatherby was chambering the 240 Wby Mag into the new Vanguard Series 2 lineup so I'm going to wait a month until there in stores and go with that Caliber,
until then I will use my Husqvarna 30-06 with 110grTTSX
Can't very well shoot varmints without a "MAGNUM" can you

I would go with a .243 or 6mm...I've shot coyotes/wolves with a .223 and a .22-250 and I have found that once you get out past 200 yards both cartridges are lacking in the energy department, even more so when you add wolves into the equation. I don't own a .223 or a .22-250 anymore, I've replaced them with a 6BR and a .243.

Wolves are much larger than Coyotes. I used a 222Rem and 22 Hornet on Coyotes with very good success especially if pelt hunting. A wolf might require something little heavier to anchor it solidly although a 223Rem and 22-250 will handle heavier bullets at 60 and 70gr but there is a requirement for a faster twist than with 50-55gr bullets. We plan on a wolf hunt after Christmas and will use the same rifle we use on deer. I believe the 22 Hornet my wife owns and my 223Rem is just too light for a 50 pound plus animal.

I'd say .223 or 22-250 for coyotes, 25-06 or .240 Weatherby for wolves would be about ideal. But whatever you use for big game will do the job on either.

Just my .02

I'll second that. Although my .300wsm makes quite a mess of a coyote. Kills 'em, guts 'em and skins them all at the same time. Hopefully my Tikka .222 will get put to use this winter. Once I'm done vermin hunting in my garage, I'll be on to varmint hunting.

50 bmg should knock them useless pest down pretty quick. Seriously though anything that will put a hole in them is a the "best" caliber.

243 and up if you expect to shoot at a wolf .22's don't have enough behind them past 250 to 300 yards for bigger dogs. I use my 270 wsm if I expect to see a wolf and my 22-250 for coyotes. I'm sure lots have died to a 22 center fire but I'm also sure lots have been lost to them as well.

I like the idea of the 30-06 with 110 bullet.... That sounds fun. Going to try it i think

.243

Can't beat the accuracy of the 308 case necked down and your choice of rifles is huge. Also very versatile for deer for a youngster.

Not trying to be a dick or anything...
I shot a coyote a few weeks ago at about 260 yards. Through the shoulder and he didn't even quiver. 22-250 with 55gr nosler bullets.

22-250 is where it's at. Join the club :)

I've shot several coyotes with my 30-06 & 125 gr bullets. Never ran across a wolf yet in my travels but I'm guessing it'll stop em in their tracks.

.264 or a 6.5 with about 90 grain pill .... I use my 6.5 with 140 grain Parts or Accubonds ... and am very happy with the amount of dogs that combo has removed from this planet.

I have also used a 22-250 on several dogs .... but have made longer shots with 6.5

Good topic.

I say use what your comfortable with. I have shot 5 wolves all with my 300wm using 200gr accubonds and 180gr ttsx all holes were less than 2" for all shots. My last wolf was taken the other day the shot was longest freehand running shot i have made i hit him high in the left hip throught the spine and the 180grttsx was found on the off side {right} shoulder protuding from the hide. I hand load fairly hot. Needless to say if I had been using my 22-250 this wolf would have gotten away later to die without being recovered if i had been running my varmit ammo. However that said my 22-250 leaves gaping fist size holes in yotes from 50 to 450yds using 55 gr soft points. Again use what your comfortable with and practice longer than normal shooting. Good luck and have fun
