View Full Version : Where to shoot a bobcat?

I've got a bobcat showing an annoying interest in my chickens and it's time to do something about it.

It hops through the electric fence, ignoring the bait (wet cat food) and the chickens are freaked and bloody from flying into their fenced in run as the cat paces along the side, looking at all those feathered meals inside.

I have a Cooey .22 with iron sights and the cat seems pretty used to humans. My first glimpse at him this afternoon was a stare down between us, him only running when I threw a chunk of ice at him.

Any tips on the best way to take him down?

While this is my second post, it was pointed out I forgot my joke. Seeing as I've only bagged snowshoe hare so far, this one feels appropriate:

One morning, a father and his young son were in the forest hunting rabbits. After about an hour, they finally came across some rabbit tracks. In between the tracks, there were these little round brown pellets, and the son said to his father, "Dad, what are those?"

The father replied, "Those are smart pills. Try a couple." So the kid grabbed a couple of them and put them in his mouth. The boy made a funny face and said to his dad, "Ewww! Yuk! They taste like s---."

The father replied, "See, you're getting smarter already."

I shot my lynx in the head with a .22, did the trick!

Good luck, he will make a beautiful rug or mount with his hide at this time of year!

I would call him out using an electronic call with a feather or wing hung in a tree above the call to act as a visual attractant. 1 22 shot through the lungs will take him down. The price you will fetch for the fur should be near $400.

I'd argue against the $400 part....Most BC BCats would max at around 250ish...with most pelts going for around 75-150....This was what is was like when I was trapping 2 years ago anyways....On the fur market, some BCat can go for 400...But those are the very light skinned cats with "Clear Bellys"-no spots...Most of our cats are dark and lots of spotted bellies

I've seen a few bobcats suck up lead like tic-tacs. Shoot it through the front shoulders, so it can't go far..

Bobcats die easy- head shot if you are close enough to be acurate -lung shot but he may run a ways - can u track ? shoulder shot - then follow up with a lung shot ! Good Luck

If it is to protect your livestock kill it with whatever you have. 12ga, 22lr, 17hmr, 30'06, 450 marlin, whatever! Worry about whats left over after it is dead! Moosin

only ever required a single .22 round
keep it simple......through the lungs
like any animal big or small its tough to breath with holes in the lungs , longest retrive ? about 20 yards.............

You'll need a license and tag 1st.

After that, the .22 would be a prudent choice imo.

Aren't you allowed to kill animals to protect your livestock?

Shed some light?

From the BC Wildlife Act: http://www.canlii.org/en/bc/laws/stat/rsbc-1996-c-488/latest/rsbc-1996-c-488.html#Part_1_General_Provisions_485

(d) with a firearm or a bow during the prohibited hours,
(e) by the use or with the aid of a light or illuminating device,
(f) with poison,
(g) with a set gun, or
(h) with a pump, repeating or auto loading shotgun unless the magazine contains a plug that is incapable of removal except by disassembling the gun, and that makes the magazine incapable of holding more than 2 cartridges.
(2) Subsection (1) (c), (d), (e) and (h) does not apply to a person who hunts or traps wildlife that is on the person's property and is a menace to a domestic animal or bird.

Aren't you allowed to kill animals to protect your livestock?

I'm not sure about the regs on that, and seeing as it's just a small flock for personal use, I don't want to push my luck. I'm going to pick up my tag tomorrow (left my hunting license at home today) and wait and see if the bobcat comes back, which I'm pretty sure he will.

... sorry. My buddy hunts a lot of lynx and bobcat. He uses a 17hmr and puts one in the shoulder. Doesn't like to mess up the hide and he doesn't eat them so he's not too concerned about meat damage.

I've been planning on using my 17HMR, 17 Rem and or my 223 with reduced 50gr Blitz loads when I'm out calling bobcat this season...

I have no plans on using a 22LR...

Good post. I have seen 2 different bobcats in the past 2 weeks on our property and I've considered going out to get one of them. We do have chickens as well and I spotted one of them about 100 yards from the house. The first one i saw was quite aways up the hill, but still on the property, I was only about 20 feet from him, caught him offguard, we stared at each other for awhile till i decided to carry on, he was quite large and had a real nice coat. Have also heard of a lynx in the area as well.

I have access to a .410 shotgun, a 22lr, and a .243 win with 100 grain lead.
