Yup, all Cowy cutts. Biggest I've had was 27", probably 9 lbs + but they are definitely few and far between now.

835, what model Sage do you mostly use for trout on the Cow?

835
12-15-2011, 03:46 PM
I have a #4 weight XP, i know people think the XP is a "Bandwagon" but it is fast enough to blast your fly in a wind, mend your line on tough water and it is accurate as well it can handle bigger fish then a slow #4. If your dry slaps the water a bit on a river it isnt such a big deal.

My wife has a 6# VPS it is better in the wind and handles bigger fish but in the latter spring early summer when the water falls a 4 is funner then a 6
so for her birthday i bought her a Z-Axis #4. That thing is sheer beauty, You can pick 3/4 of your cast right up off the water in one swoop, re direct it and blast it out again in one false cast.... Up around and out.

I am a bit bias to Sage. there is 4 in my family between my Wife and i. If i was to only have one trout rod for The Cowichan it would be a Z-Axis 5#.
a bit long winded im sorry but i love the stuff!

I am a big Sage fan too. I have four of them myself. Can't beat the lifetime warranties and take my word for it, I have used it more than once.

835
12-15-2011, 04:37 PM
Thats just it. The warrantee is good and they are dynamite to cast and work with.
Although my Buddy has a Winston Boron and that thing is splendid!

Actually, I believe this pic was from Holland.

Bruiser for sure. Not to colored up either. Nice steelie. Did you put a tape on him?

I only had him out of the water for a few seconds to get the pic, and from my experience holding big springs I put him at 27lbs.
He had the strength of a 40lb spring with the legs of a 20 pounder. My personal best steelie for sure. Hit a run of big steelies that day and had half a dozen over
20 lbs. I still remember seeing his tail on his first turn and how translucent it was ....sure gets your heart going when a big slabber is tail walking and tearing out your
tuffline.

Cowichan Lake - Lampreys not worms. Supposedly they dont harm the fish (according to the Provincial Fish and Wildlife biologists). Hence they are a protected species because these particular Lampreys are unique to Cowichan Lake. typically they're about 6-9 inches long, I'll try and get some pics of some this year and post them up - nasty looking creatures.

interesting.
so, are they just sucking on from the outside?
they aren't actually in the fish right?

i caught some rainbows and kokanee in nicola lake a few years ago that had circle lesions on their bodies like that.

Thats right, they latch on the outside like a big nasty leech. They have circular mouths with sharp teeth all around and a tongue with teeth on it that they use to bore through the side of the fish and suck their blood. Google it you'll find some scary pics. At least the Cowichan ones are only several inches long, the ones that decimated the great lakes grew to 2 feet!

This is March 300 kms up the ice road to the diamond mines:
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo264/robthefisher/DSC_0613.jpg

And here's a fish most Canadians will never see, The inconnu. Also caught in March:
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo264/robthefisher/PICT0006.jpg

The ice is a full 5 feet thick that time of year, I have to use a chipper to chip out a hole big enough so that the auger head can drop below the surface of the ice to reach the water. Fortunately that is also the time of year when it starts to warm up around here. Just thought I'd share something a little different.

They are in fact related to the whitefish, but the meat is very oily, almost like some salt water species. For most people it is an aquired taste, but they are pretty good smoked. They also get pretty big. Here's a little info :

how does an inconnnu taste?....looks kind of whitefishish.

i was trying to get an inconnu this summer in the yukon.
no luck.
they aren't something that's easy to target, most are caught while fishing for other fish.
unless of course you go to inuvik, then they're everywhere.

my #1 fish is the tarpon.
but the inconnu is "the tarpon of the north", and alot closer for me, and much more elusive, so it's on my list.

duallie,
The go to spot for inconnu in the Yukon is the confluence of the Klondike river and the Yukon river. Basically, downtown Dawson City. For more info go to the Midnight Sun hotel and speak to Haine, he is " The Man " when it comes to slaying them.

thanks.
i know that the farther north in the yukon you go, the more abundant they seem to be.
i'm usually around whitehorse when i visit.
i tried in the teslin river this year.
a friend told me about a spot where he catches them.
either i didn't find the right spot, or he was exaggerating.
we were drinking at the time, so details of the story could have easily been blurred, both in the telling and the hearing.

again, can't hide what i caught it on.
http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w362/deddeer/DSCF0277_zps4efcb47e.jpg
i love this lake.
i'd troll between an island and shore, maybe twenty foot channel.
there was a saddle to go over where it shallowed up.
and every time the lure would come over that other side of the saddle, boom, fish on.
lakers every pass.

then, a couple hundred yards from this spot, there's a big shallow bay where the pike are laying in.

and right past the point of the bay, another long cigar-shaped bay that was holding huge grayling, that seemed to be feeding endlessly.

it was my favourite lake when i lived up there.
and i make a point to always get back to it when i get up there.
and no, you can't know the name.

That is a TANK!!!!
nice Bow!

thanks.
i only wish i caught it and not my buddy.
i should have shot video of the fight, but i was shocked at the fight he was having.
this was from shore in the yukon, and the way it would slash through the water creating a wake behind it looked like a shark coming towards us.
it was so close to going into a corner a couple times where there was a big trees with braches under the water.
it was his biggest fish and his grin never left his days for weeks.
