What type of steel do you use?

My wife and I carry original Wyoming knives. http://www.wyomingknife.com/knives.htm They are great for gutting and skinning. I carry a RUKO small game knife (3"blade) and a cheepy for rough work as well. My wife has the Wyoming Knife, a nice Buck 102 Woodsman (4") with Cherrywood handle and a cheepy for rough work as well. The larger bladed knives are just too much and aren't very well suited to caping or other delicate work.

I like Helle Knives of Norway you can buy just the blade if you wish and make your own handle if your cheap like me.

there is actually several knife makers on this site, myself included. Blacktail, (Roy) has some very good quality items.
you can't really ask which steel someone uses, because it would generally go by the customers choice. the steels available are endless. it all depends on the intended job for the knife .
if you go with custom, PM Blacktail and he could give you some good prices.

Best all round knife going, unique blade design is fantastic right from ripping through thick hide, making your A-line incision to skinning. Easy to sharpen and holds a good edge.

Fallkniven http://www.fallkniven.com/en I carry the full line at www.vantagepoint-outfitters.com I use the U2 as an every day carry pocket knife, the WM1 for field dressing, and an F1 for camp and taking critters apart.

I also carry Roy's knives from Blacktail Custom Designs - he makes a great knife and sheath at a very reasonable price. If you decide to pick up a Blacktail might as well buy direct from Roy and he can help you with material selection, design, etc. Can't go wrong working with Roy, reliable and straightforward guy that will communicate well and do a great job!

Have owned the same Buck knife and Schrade Oldtimer for more than 30 years, see no reason to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy knives these 2 have nevre failed me the schrade is very easy to sharpen while the Buck seems to stay sharp for ever, can probably still buy both for $150

Grohmann moose skinner? I have (and use) a Grohmann #1 hunting knife. . . Simple, elegant, inexpensive (mine was given to me way back when I worked in a knife store) and can me made razor sharp. I also chose the carbon steel over the stainless, as the carbon steel sharpens sticky-sharp.

Also, 100% Canadian Made! :-)

I haven't had the chance to test mine out on a recently killed animal, but it came out of the box razor sharp. I have used a Buck knife for years and I love it. I find the Kestrel to be almost dangerously light, you hardly realize you are holding a knife. As far as the size and feel of it, it's great. Can't wait to put it to good use.

If you haven't already purchased one and want something that is a little less dear than most a very good production knife is the Mora 840 MG Carbon. They can be had for $12 at Amazon and are an excellent knife, hold an edge well and are a scandi grind that is quite easy to keep sharp with a stone.

I have a lot of knives and I sure like the one that Roy (Blacktail) made for me, it is my heirloom knife of the pack.

Hunting knife is pretty generic, do you know what you like in a knife. there is alot of personal preference in knives, if you know what you like in a knife I would def recommend a custom from either Blacktail or Ddog. I have seen work from both and it's very impressive

Custom, or the Kuiu. Blacktail does make some beauties, I love what I purchased from him. I believe it's good value for custom hand made.

For a cool custom, check out North River forge. Retro, mountain-man type stuff (hand forged). I have the small frontier hunter and love it! For store-bought, I'd go with Buck; they have a lifetime guarantee which I have tested several times!

I'll have one of Blacktail Custom's at the Duncan Gun Show for sale this Sunday... It is on special New Year clearance. I want to bring in a couple of his new ones and need to clear some stock.

For an awesome butcher knife, I had a Cold Steel blank for a HBC trade knife, which I altered (slightly) and handled with Yew wood. Looks totally "retro," cuts like a lightsabre.
