Back to The Hacienda late yesterday. Wanted to post up a Loud THANKS for all of those who offered advice on hunting Region 8 with the bow! Very Much APPRECIATED! :-D
Missed the very first animal (Big 4x4 Muley) I ever fired the new bow on. An inch under the boiler room. OUCH! Spent some time re-sighting and practicing, and went right back at it...
Dropped (and I MEAN Dropped) a spike whitetail buck - first whitetail buck seen in 4.5 days of hunting - right in his tracks for the new toy's first. Surprised me, I don't recall ever seeing one fold quite so quick with the bow!
Did a solo hunt in the hills (Thanks for that advice!) near Peachland the next day. Saw ~ 25 muley does, but only one buck that wouldn't allow me to close any tighter than 70 yards. Decided with the rut well over to concentrate down the hill for the whitetails. As I only saw the 2 muley bucks the whole trip, this was the right decision!
Managed to sneak in to 20 yards on two yearling does the next day. Clean shot at that range, and I was done for Region 8.
Went with my Buddy several times after, saw an absolute GAGGER whitetail, but NO way to close. He was entertaining a doe. Couple of hills over, saw two basket racks, but after the Giant, they looked a little small for my Partner... LOL!
Stopped in Van on the way back to visit Buddies, then made the wander back to The Rock yesterday. Drove through the bow zone on the way, saw one big dry doe, but simply watched her for a spell, then wandered off...
Season truly over for me at that point...
Nice load of grits for the freezer, discovered the new bow is MURDEROUS and had a hell of a lot of FUN!
Local buddy called when I was on the way home... As melancholy as I get when the season winds down (over 70 days out there this year!) the good news about early steelhead did cheer me up substantially! Now to get these critters butchered, and ready the center-pin!! NEXT!! LOL!
Again, thanks for the sage advice fellas! Gave us lots of areas to investigate, and I did certainly appreciate that! Also a BIG Thanks to my Partner for putting up with me! Nice country you have over there! I WILL be back!!
Cheers,
Nog
