I dont even want to get into the averages or stats. First you need to understand we live in the Black Hole of waterfowl bands here, its truely wierd the amount of birds we shoot a season to the lack of any bands.

This is my first duck band EVER. And I almost didnt shoot it either. We were hunting our corn fields as the ducks are pouring in like mad everyday. We had a flock of mallards circle twice and I saw an ugly pintail in there with them. I had just shot two wigeon as limits of greenheads are getting a bit old this late in the year so I figured it was an "other duck" morning so I pulled up and shot what I thought was a hen pintail.

As I walked closer I saw it was a juvie drake and from about 40 feet I noticed what I thought was the tip of a corn stock across its leg. I got closer, I thought hmmmmm there's something grey on its leg, still didnt dawn on my yet hahahah because we never shoot bands so why would this one be any different. Then at 10 feet I knew it was banded. The wierdo bander even put the band on upside down hahaha.

Anyways, I brought it back to the laydowns and put it behind me. And not 5 minute later we had 3 ducks come into the decoys, I pulled up, boom, dropped a nice greenhead, boom, dropped a nice bull wigeon, and finally boom another greenhead. I've tripled before but this was probably the cleanest triple I've ever made. I guess it was a lucky morning, should of bought a lottery ticket but owell, I'll settle for my alaskan pintail.

All pintail, just a drake of the year. That mallard on the other hand, cant gets its genes in order.

Well done!

Bands are put on "upside down" to focus the wear as far away from the numbers as possible...with geese many also pick a certain leg for sex as well

i dont think thats the case personally, i think its because they hold the duck facing them when they band it, so the band is face up readable to them so they can take the number, heres a video: these guys might actually be the ones who banded your bird. the video and the other ones he has are of him banding pintails in minto flats, i bet you thats him

I got a banded drake widgeon once that was banded in Saanichton, BC 11 yrs before and he was of undermined age when banded.
Thats the only one I have ever shot with a band.
