Better late than never.

Its has been a slow season for me mostly. I got a blacktail early with archery but I was having a hard time with mule deer. I just couldn't get the timing right on my weekends off. I always seemed to be a little early or a little late in any given spot.

Then about 4 weeks ago I took a friend into a spot that I've been trying to figure out for the past couple of years. I haven't gotten to spend alot of time there but I knew the summer range and the mid season range,I just couldn't find the deer when they were rutting. I knew it didn't get any pressure because of access and there must be some big bucks dieing of old age. That weekend we found good sign and found this guy.

At the time I figured he would be about a 170-175" buck.

He was on the move and left me in his dust with no opportunity. So the following weekend I went back with another friend from Powell River that I've done some guiding with. We had fantastic conditions. About 6 inches of fresh powder, a light moon and bitter cold. On the first morning we found the same buck with about 5 other 4 points and lots of does, rutting hard. One of the other bucks was a solid 4x4 with an 8 inch dropper off the back. We waited and watched as the big buck pushed a doe into a draw. We made a long stalk and got in the middle of the herd. Waiting until we got too cold to wait anymore Andrew shot the dropper. It was a brutal pack but well worth it.

The following day we were back in the same place and we were able to catch the big guy doing a cirquit (we figured) and heading back to his does.

Thanks avadad. It sure is. I got a good buck a couple years ago but it wasn't my spot and it wasn't really my buck. Though I am very proud of him I knew that I just got lucky. This one felt very rewarding after the homework and prep and every year feels like I learn a little bit more.

I do have some more vids, they haven't been much of a priority lately unfortunately. I'll gettem up one day.

He's a great guy, an excellent hunter and alot of fun to hunt with. He's 34 and outwalks this 27 year old body every time! For the last couple of years we've shared a common hunter and his son's that have turned into good friends as well so we've had a chance to hunt together quite a bit. Hoping to put together a January bowhunt for a last kick at the cat.

Think so??

How'd the steaks taste Bruin?? I'm a bit scared to try the steaks off my late season mulie backstraps.

bruin

I wouldn't do steaks off any of them. The meat smelled fine and we had some hamburger in spagetti the other night and it was pretty good. Should've tried a steak or two I guess, just to see what it was like.

Just given em a hard time.

Had one in October that smelled one year.

Just like everything else, you gotta try it at least once.

If it doesnt pan out grind and add garlic.
