Had or still have depending where I lost the last leatherman, just bought another leatherman sidekick. I like the leatherman better than the gerber because I've had a few gerber knives and they didn't seem to hold an edge plus I found they break easy. I've never bought sog so I can't say anything about them.

I own a few SOG knives, and LOVE them. My buddy has a SOG multitool and its amazing. They do make a quality product.

I've used a few of them and still come back to the Leathermans. The whole point of a multi tool is one that is reasonably sleek and light, so you always have it with you. They aren't supposed to be good at rebuilding engines or loosening lug nuts. :)

Leatherman wave. Handy like the surge but less weight and 1/2" shorter.

Leatherman PST II multi tool. Great tool, won't leave the house without it.
Like Gatehouse says sleek and light.
SOG all the way, try one out, you'll see for yourself. nothing wrong with leatherman, but I found the SOG put more attention to the small details, ex. the teeth on the pilers line up well, good needle nose point and close, handles and pilers open/close at same rate,
SOG= Special Observation Group, they are like the company 3m where they focus on improving products and a their functionality.

X2. I have had all three and my SOG has been the best. I especially like the gear teeth between the pliers and handles. I can cut telegraph wire repeatedly. The only downfall I've seen is price and availability.

I own 3 Leathermans and use them all, My favourite is the wave with the one hand blade opening. I still have an original model and just picked up the fuse as groomsman gifts for my wedding party.
I have had Gerbers in the past and they are not up to the standards of the Leatherman but I did like the way the pliers snapped out.

I've owned the leatherman wave for years, broke the lock for the blade, sent it in and received the new version for the price of postage.

Leatherman wave. Try find a leather case for it though. Sometimes you have to resort to eBay. I used to always buy gerber multitools because if the one hand plier opening.

My current Leatherman is the CHARGE, titanium, so it's a bit lighter.

I've the Surge and it's awesome. Some complain about the weight but I wanted bigger tools. Otherwise I'd go for the Wave. I can't imagine the daily gymnastics other tool users do to get to their blades all the time. If he's a shooter there are "black" versions of these tools that have some gun related extras.

I have a Craftsman that I love using. Lifetime unconditional warranty. If anything breaks on it take it back to Sears and get a new one over the counter!

ive rocked a gerber in the past and liked the one handed opening and the geometry of the handles better than competitors.

Had a number of leathermen and a greber lost or had them "dissapear" I now have a Stanley...$19 at he Rona lasted me for a couple of years the knife holds a good edge and the wire cutters work well cant seem to distroy (and I use it pretty hard around the ranch and on the road) or loose it and IF I do $.80 a month hasnt been bad rent lol

I have the Leatherman Wave, worn it every day for the last 5 years (except at work... people get worried in the ER when you walk up wearing one of those!) I like the one hand open of the blades, the pliers aren't bad, and the scissors have stayed really sharp. I have handled the SOG versions, but stayed with the Wave. I like the curved edges on the handles.

had a gerber and wasnt impressed. Ive had the leatherman surge for about 5 years. Pretty wicked piece of kit except for the weight. not something i could carry around on my belt all the time. bought it because it has a fairly large serrated blade otherwise i would have got the wave. I use it to cut 1.5" poly rope when im splicing lines for the tugboat i work on so it's taken a beating. For just everyday use at work i keep a SOG flash II in my pocket. that knife is probably pushing 10 years old and with some seriously heavy use. Both knives have been great. I learned a long time ago that you're better of spending the money on good quality gear and it will more than pay for itself.
