Hey guys,
My group had a pretty successful season this year as far as what we were after, so I thought i would share some stories. Please be patient as its going to be a long one and I have to upload pics!

Like most guys on here, I could not stop checking online back in the summer to see what sort of luck I had with my LEH this year. One day at work i got a call from a buddy in my hunting party, screaming that their group of 3 had been drawn for the november bull moose hunt. I stopped what i was doing and got on the computer. To my surprise, my group of 3 (Dad, brother and I) Had drawn as well. Needless to say i was thrilled. This is the first year we've drawn in 7 years, and we got 4 tags!

After I returned from work in Alberta at the end of August, a scouting/ fishing trip was planned. We had seen some great bulls in our hunting area these past years, so we were anxious to see what was out there. After putting alot of miles on the boots and quads, we stumbled across a handful of bulls, including a pair of PIGS that were travelling together. I managed to get a couple pictures.

These were a set of immatures that I would be keeping an eye on

A good young bull, who thought he was invisible. Cant really see his antlers here but he was decent

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/mooooo.jpg
And here is one of the hogs. His buddy was camera shy i guess, but they were both the same size. My guess is 45- 50 inches. Biggest bulls I have seen in this area. He would be my target for this year

During the scouting trip, i managed to put a twig through this little guy with my old mans traditional recurve. Not a trophy by any means, but it's my first big game bowkill and a tasty one at that!

Well, middle of october came fast. With the rut going, and immatures opening up, I thought I'd take another trip up to the cabin and see if we could locate some bulls and maybe get some footage of calling one in. Nothing gets my heart going like a big bull walking in with his head swaying back and forth.

My younger brother got cocky this year after 7 unsuccessful tries, and put his LEH in solo near our uncles in Prince George, and nada.. The good news for him was that we had spotted 4 immatures in our scouting efforts already. We would try to get one in his sights this trip.

The first morning, we decided to hike into our honey hole where we have spotted 8 different bulls in the past 3 years. This is where we spotted the two immatures in september. About half way up the old cut block, we see some promising sign.

Though we only saw a cow that morning, hopes were high and we would return next morning

Yes sir. On our way back to the cabin one night during the scouting trip, we saw 2 REAL dandy bucks cross the road in front of the truck just after shooting light. There is an old treestand set up close to here, so i figured it was some sort of game trail. The next night I was on the same road with about 30 minutes left of shooting light, and figured what the heck. I parked the truck and got my pack and bow ready.

I spotted a small stand of trees that i figured would give me a good 360 degree view of my surroundings, this would be my spot. I had just gotten into the trees, and had started to remove my pack when i spot movement out of the corner of my eye. It's a doe, a big doe. Shes looking right at me so i freeze. We end up playing a little game where i try to remove my pack inch by inch every time she looks away. Finally i get it off.

I am just about to take a seat when i turn to my right and see a deer coming out of the bush not 20 yards from me. Right away I see antlers, knock an arrow and bring the bow up. A quick shot behind the shoulder and he didnt put up much of a fight. I think If i had waited a little longer one of the big boys would have came through, but temptation got the best of me and I took him without thinking twice. Here is another pic of him

Haha! sorry, it was a rough night. Now back to the moose hunt

We returned next morning, but were late to get out of bed. Drove in to our parking spot about 30 minutes after first light, and started the hike in. We decided to work the treeline of the cut block (about 3 km squared)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/103.jpg

To paint a picture, the cut has a lower section that is relitively flat, then large hillside section with some trees left standing at the top where a couple small meadows are. There is a massive back side which is only visible once you reach the top. You could hike it all day.

We get almost to the top, when i catch something in the corner of my eye. A small tree at about 200 yards with what i first think is a piece of marking ribbon. Up go the binos, and now it looks more like a fresh rub. We start heading towards it to check it out and snap a picture.

Once we get to the rub, we hear a loud crashing from the tree line and hooves thumping. I thought "Sh!t, we've spooked something." We hear the crashing again, but to me it didnt sound like something running. A quick glance at the timber and I see what appears to be a meadow that is hidden by 30 feet or so of treeline left standing. I have never noticed this before. All of a sudden i can make out two dark figures through some small gaps in the trees.

There is a big body and a small body, my initial thought was cow calf. Then the shapes start locking heads and sparring, which explains the initial crash we heard. I have never witnessed a bull moose battle live, and the heart started racing. After watching them go at it for a minute or so, the fight moves into a gap wide enough for us to get a look. Two immatures. a 2x2 with the body size of a calf, and then a 3x2. Game on.

My brother drops to a knee and shoulders his rifle. I let out a couple soft grunts, and both animals stop to stare at us. The smaller one offered the better shot, crack goes the 270 and the bullet finds its mark right through the lungs. He goes about ten feet and drops. I debated taking the other one as he just sat there and stared, but decided not to with my LEH coming up and a lot of meat in the freezer already. It was his first moose, and after a quick celebration we headed over to the kill.

Well, the time finally arrived. After a wild halloween, it was time to finish packing up and head out. November 1st was a tuesday, and the rest of the boys couldnt get the whole 10 days off work so it was just Me, my dad and one of my brothers until the weekend.

The first day was promising. I headed up to the same place we took the immy out of a couple weeks back, and saw a cow and that 2x3 bull. He can walk until later in the month, unless one of my buddies wants him.

After meeting back at the cabin, i find that my Dad and brother had seen two bulls travelling together in one of my dads old spots from 30 years ago. One was a young 4x3, and the other a decent bull but not a shooter this early. It appears there was still some rut activity going on, as the guys found this rub in that area with fresh branches on the ground on top of the snow.

A few cow sightings over the next few days, but no bulls. The boys showed up thursday evening and everyone was ready to get out there after hearing of our sightings. A spike bull was spotted on friday by one of the guys, but he let him walk as he had an extended weekend to hunt, unlike the others . After returning from saturday mornings hunt, I hear that a couple of the guys drove up on a small bull that they would have taken, but he took off without offering an ethical shot.

Next day, i take one of the guys with me who is after anything with antlers. We head to the area my dad and brother spotted the two bulls previously. We bumped into a large cow on the drive in

After getting to the deactivation, we get out and start to walk. The road T's about a km in, and we see a decent set of moose tracks headed to the left. Both roads lead to good cuts where we have seen a good bunch of animals
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/130.jpg

I send my friend on the road to the left, and i take the right. Alot of wolf tracks on my side, would love to take a poke at one of those moose killers! Saw a cow with a calf feeding in the cut, then started to head out as I still had a long hike back. On the way out, i spot movement at the treeline about 400 yards away. Binos up, its a bull. I counted 5 on one side and 4 on the other, not a shooter for me but i knew my partner would gladly take it. I call for him on the radio, no answer. I try him 4 or 5 times before it was getting too dark to shoot and i headed for the truck. After meeting with him, i asked if he was deaf. He pulls out the radio and it was turned off the whole time.. Lesson learned and we depressively drank that night

The action really slowed down after that, and hardly any animals were spotted. Guys we met in the bush werent seeing much either, both on and off the roads. Now we were starting to regret letting those animals walk earlier in the trip. A couple days later we decide to head to try a new logging road that had just been punched in which ran through a chain of cuts. Not 100 yards in, this catches my eye about 20 yards into the treeline.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/145.jpg

We made it about 2 km in when we come to a truck parked on the road. Out in the cut, we see an orange jacket so we turn around and head out.

About 600 yards or so from where the truck was, my buddy says "Moose!" He had seen a large black body back in the birch trees. How did we miss it on the way in? We keep driving about 100 yards, park the truck and walk back. We finally get in view of him, and up go the binos. Right away I see antlers. Not a monster, but a good sized animal with some decent head gear on him. The bull had seen enough and starts to walk deeper into the bush. Now or never. I tell my buddy to take a poke at him before he disappears out of sight. Up goes the 7mm, he is at about 150 yards and walking. CRACK! the bull flinches bigtime like he got smoked, and slowly trots out of sight. Big high fives and then grabbed the packs and knives and headed in.

We get to the spot he was at, hmmm... no blood. We start searching around the area for signs. Nothing. Now were starting to worry. Did it hit him? Was it just a bad shot? The rest of the day was spent walking grids through the woods. Not a drop of blood, must have missed him. The ride home was dead silent, and long as a heavy snow storm just moved in. We were discouraged to say the least.

We get back to the cabin and theres no vehicles there? strange. We open a garage door and there is a note on the work bench. "BULL DOWN- NEED HELP. BRING QUAD AND TRAILER" with directions to the kill. Our spirits were lifted, and after a few shouts of excitement we loaded up and headed out. We get to the kill site and find a bunch of happy campers with cold ones cracked. Not a brute but we were sure happy. Double header would have been great that night, but oh well.. Beers all around

Well with the end of the season coming up, we headed back up for one last kick at the can. Late getting out of town, so we missed the thursday evening hunt and would get an early start Friday. We got out into the bush in the dark, and i decided to head back to the cut we hit the immature at and saw the big bulls pre-season. I have never seen such a sunrise, it put a spooky glow on the whole cut making a cool walk in
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/210.jpg

The first hour brings no luck, i am almost at the top of the hill which will let me see over to the backside, and i spot this set of tracks headed into the bush.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/137.jpg

It snowed the previous night, so these were fresh. Did i just miss him? Oh well.. I kept pushing on. I get to the top and am about to start glassing the back side, when something catches my eye about 250 yards away. I see a big black object, and without even bringing up the binos I see bone..
Binos up and take a peak. Hes a bull, a good mature bull with a solid rack on him. He was making his way for the treeline, and would be there in about 100 yards. Up goes the 30-06 and i wait for my shot. Front leg goes forward and i tuck one right behind the shoulder. He does the wobbly dance and plunks down 20 yards later. PUMPED! Call the boys on the radio and tell them Im gonna need help. He is not the one i was after, but with 4 days left of the season and a tag still in our pockets there was no way he was gonna walk. Very happy with him

Well, with 3 days left in the season and one more tag, it was time to try and find my brother a bull. We decided we would mainly road hunt for the remainder of the trip, as the snow was crunchy and getting pretty deep (Also the heavy beer consumption had us getting a little lazy!). I had a couple roads in mind that i knew held a fair amount of moose, so that morning we headed out in the dark. We parked at the beginning of the first road until it was light enough to see, then headed in.

Not 50 yards in, i see fresh moose tracks on the right side of the road. We kept driving slowly as we examined the tracks, and nearly drove right into the cow that had made the tracks who had just crossed the road to the left side. After watching her for a minute, we kept going. Not 100 yards later, we spot another cow. They must be moving today, looks promising! We keep driving. Another 500 yards or so, we spot a cow calf..
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/218.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/217.jpg

We keep driving to the end of the road, and bump into another big cow. What the heck is going on here? We turn around and head back to the main road and the animals hadnt moved. 5 moose within 15 minutes, on a road that is only 2 km? Not bad!

Next we decided to head back to one of my Dad's old areas. About 2 minutes in, we spot this girl. I really like this picture with the snow on her nose, one of the better ones i took on the trip
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/215.jpg

A couple clicks up the road there is a big meadow about 500 yards off the road that i wanted to check out. This is where my Dad shot his first moose over 30 years ago. The meadow used to be walk in only, and not visible from the road... Now, the trees are cut all the way down to the meadow and only a few patches of timber are left standing. Most of it is within view from the road. We get to the spot on the road where you can view the meadow, and i catch a glimpse of a black spot standing in the middle. We get out and have a look.

After looking through the binos, I see that it's a cow. All of a sudden, moose start popping into view. "BULL!" I hear my brothers say. "BIG BULL!"

A closer look reveals FIVE moose, three of which are bulls! One BIG sucker with huge brow palms and really tall paddles. Hes got weird points sticking out all over, looks to be an old animal and a trophy at that. Another bull looks decent with nice palms, but is noticably smaller than the big one. Id say 35 inch spread. The last one is a young bugger, looks to be either an immature or 3x3, and then two cows. Needless to say, the hearts were pumping.

The two bigger bulls start playfully sparring, and the little guy is necking with one of the cows. This was definitely one of my best experiences moose hunting. I wish i had a camera with better zoom, as i know my old man would've loved to have seen this.

It was about a 400 yard poke, and the animals were fairly close together so my brother was not 100 percent comfortable to take the shot. We didnt want to take a bad shot and ruin our chances at these animals for the trip, so we gambled and tried to put on a stalk that would put us out of view for a bit.

We check the wind, and head the long way down to them as I figure this is our best chance. We come at them from an angle where the wind is in our favour, but the snow is like walking on rice crispies. What usually would be a 10 minute walk takes us about 40 minutes. We almost get in view of the meadow, and i hear crashing in the trees 50 yards from us. Next, i hear raking. Briefly we catch a glimpse of a rear end and antlers, but no shot offered. We sit and wait to see if they pop out, but nothing. We check the meadow, nothing. We could have went into the timber after them but I made the call to back out and avoid spooking them. We would leave them alone that night and try again in the morning. Discouraged, but hopes remained high. That night a few moose were sighted, but all cows including this one who kept running along the road 15 yards in front of the truck for 4 or 500 yards. She wouldnt stand still for a good picture! We had an early night and got back at er in the morning

ElliotMoose
12-09-2011, 06:13 PM
We debated that night whether or not to walk into that meadow in the dark next morning and wait. I made the call not to, just in case the animals were beaded down on the edge which would blow our chances before the sun even rose with the snow being so noisy. We decided to do the same hunt as we did the previous morning. Get to that same 2km road at first light, and saw 3 cows. We then head to the road with the meadow. 2 minutes in, we bump into this cow walking along the road.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/214.jpg

About 2 more clicks up the road just before we get to the meadow, we see this on the road about 200 yards from us. Just after i snapped this picture, she crossed the road and a calf came running behind her
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/216.jpg

We get to the meadow, and theres a moose in there. I put some glass on it and see a BIG mature cow. We watch for a couple minutes, and another moose comes walking into view. Its a bull. After a look, I confirm that it is the smaller of the two mature bulls we saw the day before. Being the second last day, we will gladly take him. The only problem is, now the animals are at the farthest side of the meadow from us... about 500 yards. My brother and I start to walk along the cut line down towards the meadow, and all of a sudden 30 yards from us in the treeline is a nice little 4x3 whitey buck, WHY now?! He stares at us offering a perfect shot for about 5 minutes before taking off. We pass him up even though we have a tag, as the moose was priority. We get to about 380 yards but the cow is standing directly behind the bull and a shot would take both animals out. They know something is up, and start slowly walking together toward the treeline offering no shot as we watch helplessly. They werent spooked, so we decided to head back to the cabin, get our portable ground blind, and camp in the meadow for the remainder of the hunt. We got back out around 1 oclock after a huge breakfast with beer and jerky and set up for the long day.

ElliotMoose
12-09-2011, 06:22 PM
We set up the blind, and prepared for the long wait. This was the view from our blind. We set up on the opposite side of the meadow from where we had seen the moose

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/chrisbrien/220.jpg

As luck would have it, the wind really picked up that day and nothing came into the meadow that evening. Cold as hell, we headed out and left the blind in the meadow. We would return the next morning in the dark and give it one final shot on the last day. Standards were now out the window, and we would shoot the first bull we saw

By 7 30, we were chilled to the bone. We dressed warm but it was -16 that morning, and it didnt help that we were sitting down the whole time. 8 30 rolls around and still nothing sighted. My brother is half asleep when i catch movement out of the corner of my eye towards the truck. I bring the binos up and see a moose. At first I thought it was a cow, but a closer look revealed small antlers. Must be that little guy from a couple days earlier. He is crossing the cut that is between the meadow and the road, RIGHT towards our truck. We waited until he was in a safe spot to shoot, about 30 yards from the treeline and i gave a soft cow call. He stopped in his tracks, and my brother lets one fly out of the 7 mm. The bull didnt move an inch. "I got him!" My brother says. "Put another one in him!" I tell him. Next bullet smacks him right through the boiler room and he drops 15 yards later. After skinning the animal out we discovered the first shot was a miss, thank god those things arent the brightest! It was all smiles and hugs for his first big game kill, he must have thanked me 50 times. Man was i excited for him. A priceless family moment, and memories that will last a lifetime.

In total we had 43 moose sightings on this five day trip, which is unlike anything i have ever seen. Good to know theres still a couple moose back in them hills, even with all the hunting pressure and the high predator population right now. Already counting down the days till next season.Time to see if i can get a couple wolves down ;)

We got him skinned out, and had another good night with my brothers around the fire that evening. A hunting season I will truly never forget.

Special indeed, wish the old man could have made it up for the last trip.. but hey there will always be more hunts right? Great feeling to help someone get their hunting career started as well.
Thanks for the comment

Wow that was a great hunt. The 2 pics of moose on the road would make me sit there until I got mine.
You have a much better spot in Reg 3 than I do.

There's no rush like the one you experienced watching those bulls fight. Congrats to you and your brothers on a fine hunt. Great story.

Theyre out there! Just gotta get off the roads a little. Alot of hunting pressure across the region pushes the animals back into the bush until the traffic slows.
Mik- couldnt agree with you more, sent chills down my spine. I cant imagine watching a couple of them 50"+ monsters from up north go at it! The power behind those suckers is something else. Legs like pistons

Thanks for the stories. I have a cabin in region 3 and have been patiently been waiting many, many years for a draw.

I didnt put in for moose this year, although I know where they are now and what needs to be done to get one. I didnt want to waist a tag, for I know it needs focus and time to get one. I did put in for a DOE, thats like shooting fish in a barrel.

Regardless, this year I want to hold off, try hunting the rutt. Im usually tagged out in October and this year ill focus on the kids and hopefully my doe leh.

Great pics great story thanks for sharing, I love region3
