In my experience, white tails rut in the Kettle Vly. Nov. 4th - 9th. Now this all depends on the weather. Sometimes the rut only happens durring the night because its warm out. The deer ( I think ) would rather run around when its cooler. Mulies Im still trying to figure out.

last year my buddy shot a 170 class mulie near westbank, while it literally had its head up a does ass. It was november 2nd, there was 3 ft of snow on the ground and it was at the highest point of the mountain.

Its my humble opionon that mule deer stay in the high country as long as they can. And just getting home from a trip through pemberton to gold bridge and on back to salmon arm no snow on the mountains . I`ll bet the migration in the yalicom is late this year.

I was up the Yalakom about two weeks ago and on the road over to Mud Lakes, it had snowed a little, but, was very warm, still. To me, the best time to be there is after Remembrance Day.

Hey Jel, about migration it really depends on what type of migratory deer is in the herd. Some deer head out at a certain time of year regardless of snowfall amounts. These deer typically travel a long way to their winter range 50 - 100 km. They're way the f*** in the backcountry and travel through many high mountain passes (which can get snowed in heavily if they wait) and will stage at the higher plateaus before the rut and/or heavier snows push them to the winter range. Some will even hit the winter range no matter what.
The other type of migrator will stay until the snow forces him/her to their winter range. These deer typically don't go as far. Like some deer on the Island or Interior that summer in the alpine directly above their winter range. For instance I've had big snows one week where they're all in the oldgrowth (barnyarded up) and the next week after a mild rain be hunting them right back up on top of the world. Sometimes I've followed groups of deer heading back up top on a foot or two of frozen crusted snow. Most of you/Jel probably already know this but I love talking about migratory deer. In my book Mountain Bucks Rule!

JMac,
You've hit the nail right on the head. There are some herds in this province that bail the first skiff of snow because they have many ranges to cross before they get to where they are heading. Other herds can be on the winter range in a matter of hours. Each pocket of deer will be different depending on where they are heading.

In regard to .300H's post, I dont know which kettle valley he is refering to - the one above Kelowna (Southernmost hillside) or the one towards Christian Valley (Kettle River Valley)

Dont know if it matters, but the whitetails tend begin to rut around Nov 10 - Mule deer ont he other hand (around kelowna atleast) are a ltitle bit earlier, I start seeing chasing around Nov 1 or 2.

Ive been told of an area that all the mule deer from faser canyon and merritt winter, and shed their horns. Apparently there is only boat/fly in access but it would be amazing to walk through this valley and find the sheds!

A mountain pass my buddy and I call the getaway pass. The trail is deep and quite evident, we wait for the right weather and call in sick for the next three days. Your garanteed to shoot something if you want to. Theese deer are on route to gang/empire.

I work in forestry so I am out in the bush a lot in the fall. Last year we had all that early snow, much of in areas where the cattle had not moved out yet. I was working up the North end of Mabel lake there were trails everywhere! They were so deep and well trampled I just assumed they were cattle until I actually looked and was surprised to see mostly deer tracks. Looks like a tough area to hunt, and I just haven't had the time to scout the area better in the summer.

On another note, many of the Deer (especially WT's) East of Vernon are resident, and don't migrate all that much. I've see a good variety of bucks at all elevations from early sept, right through to Nov.

In my experience it generally seems that MD are rutting in the first 2 weeks of Nov, and WT's in the latter 2. Depending on weather, temp, snow etc.

Always fun to try and figure out...

Hey Jel :)
One spot in reg 8 that we hunt has an early Oct migration, we were there last week and saw hundreds and hundreds of does and fawns and small bucks, just like a parade. :) The bigger boys will be along soon enough looking for their girl friends. The small forks had groups of six or more does.. in a week or two it will be a ghost town there. Once in a while a reasonable buck will move with them and you might catch them in the timber.

Just got back from 8-9 today. Spent a day & 1/2 up arawana fsr and found no deer. I have a doe tag for newbie hunters in this area and would love to fill it by nov 15. All i connected with were some grouse. I did see a big cow moose though. Very cool. First ever. Slept in my truck at 5600 ft. Everything was frozen except for me . Truck didn't like to start this morn. Where are the does in 8-9 ??

I was gettin worried I was wasting my gas to get to all these areas...LoL. I went out this morning and saw tons of deer BUT they were all the in the farm fields feeding this morning. (roche lake turn off) I covered alot of ground to where I went and didnt see anything alive out there other then the other hunters who say they seen nothin. Its drivin me mad cause its goin on 2 years now and I aint got nothing yet. I wish there were more WT then MD around here. They are so much more easier to hunt. at least from my MB experiences

I just got back fro scotty creek and shot my deer at 4500 ft and spotted lots of deer moving through that elevation compared to the lower elevation areas. I think with the cold and snow that will be hitting today they might start moving a lot more.

was just all over the top end of kettle and christian valley and there are lots of wt all over....muleys were a little harder...saw BT and WT does everywhere, but the BT horns were above 4000 WT spikes and such everywhere but nothing seen over 3 pts....definitly fewer MD around than other years but I am also a week or so early compared to normal...however it was colder than usual.

We were in 5-1 93 mile area, and for the amount of time we pounded the bush we should have seen lots of deer. A forestry worker we spoke to said that in Sept. the place is crawling with them but they move off the high country in Oct. towards the Fraser and 3-30. Is this correct? Heading back up there tonight and would like to know for sure.

I've been huning the edge of the blacktails range in region 3. I really don't know where the bucks summer, but i assume at a high altitude; probably not even where i hunt. But, i have seen sign that makes me confidant that they are rutting in the area till atleast mid-novemeber, to even late november. Which makes sense with the migration behaviour. I am currently trying to find "that trail". Its near the fraser canyon, which i know is good winter range in this area. So i'm thinking it makes sense to keep pursuing these hunting grounds, even though I haven't actually seen a flippin buck yet.
