Where I was guiding, it was the best I have ever seen.

An easy 30-40 by mid day was the normal, even in the blowing snow and rain. I sent a buddy down a road to walk and check out for me and he counter 32 by 10 in the morning.

I had them fly out of trees and land beside me while calling on a river.

Moved over to hunt moose for myself and the grouse numbers were down from last year, not nearly as many.

On the Island here it was not bad, seen more than usual.

Cheers

thats strange you saw so many grouse !
with the spring being so wet this year.Normally affects ground nesting game birds,
Although i saw some grouse this year, not as many as normal

if you look up grouse populations, you will find that the spring plays a small part in the population of grouse. Grouse actually follow a 10 year population cycle, same as rabbits. Yes weather can play a part in the population control, but predation (#1), disease and habitat all play a bigger part.

Up north where I guide, there has always been lots of grouse, but this year was amazing. There is lots of aspen, willow and very thick cover, plus, and I believe this plays a big part, there was lots of rabbits this year, which means that the preds were utilizing the rabbits for food and not the grouse.

thanks ss
that all makes sense !
I took my info from back in britain where the grouse populations are affected greatly on the grouse moors if you get a really wet spring due to there nests getting washed out.
I thought it would be simmilar here !

South of Merritt was very slow this year but up near Adams during youth season we saw hundreds, just couldn't shoot them. The best place for grouse in my season was north west of Smithers, them and bears were on every corner!!

The Similkameen area was very productive for Blues this year. The other three MU's I hunted this season had much lower populations.

this was the best grouse season for us, saw lots, shot our limits two days straight in Okanagan, shot 6 from chilliwack, and then 6 more from princeton in a half day road hunt.

Bagged out on spruce twice, blues once, and ruffed once. All in the Okanagan. You must be doing something wrong because I only ever get them by chance while I am out on big game hunts.

A few up here on North coast. . . but not what there should be. It was a very wet and cool spring. However, lots of rabbits, so I'm thinking that next year should be better, as the coyotes are paying more attention to the bunnies, and begging in the villages a lot less.
