Well I hadn't been out in a while and my son Chris agreed to go out this morning if my better half would get the grandkids off to school. Being the peach that she is arrangements were made. Arrived at Chris's place at 7:30 am and listen to all the good stopries from the grandkids and then Chris and I are off. Stop at 7/11 for coffee and snacks and into the bush we go. Cruising down an old road looking for bambi's or bruins, Chris slows down and stops to glass thinking he might have seen a deer, nothing, moves his truck about 5' and I yell what's that !! a bear !! no maybe just a stump. Well the stump's head moved and it is a decent size. Mad scramble on my part, outta the truck throw in the clip, make sure Chris is ready with the video, he is saying anytime now would be good!! impatient youth. Pull the gun up then remember to flip up the lens covers. Nice looking bear I'm thinking, wait for what looks to be a good shot as it is moving around. swings sideways and I figure it is as good as I am going to get. Put the crosshairs just where I want and squeeze. Bear pancakes, much hooting, back legs are still moveing so now I figure I spined it. It is lying on it's back so I aim for the head, boom, no more movement.
It was foggy so not 100% sure of yardage as range finder wouldn't register but we figure 150 yds at least. Turned out to be a nice dry sow that would be in the 300 pound plus range and measured 5' 8 1/2 ". Nailed it with my 30-06 180 grain. It was quartering away more than I thought and hit her above the shoulder and out the throat.
This is my first bear in over 25 years at least and being out there with my son just made it great !!!!! Total time from getting coffee to heading back to town 1 hr and 25 min.
I know the rules and Chris will post pictures momentarily. Mike

I'm just kidding Mike, we did some video last spring and we shot a bear and you would have thought the camera man was doing the shooting.

Glad to see you connect. Nice looking bear.

Marc.

After viewing the video I am disappointed in my self for not taking the second shot sooner. After the first shot I rand around the truck to get a better look and then saw it was thrashing around so went and got a good rest for the second shot. Mike

Mike there was only 30 seconds from the first shot to the second one don't be so hard on yourself. He was dead and didn't know it yet. It's easy to judge watching the video without being there to see what you could see and what the camera saw. Good shooting and like I said before great bear.

You'd almost think that Chris shot the way he flinched with the videocam. Good poke Mike, nothing like the 30.06, right? See PGKris, 30.06, never mind the 270. 30.06. 100 years old and still going strong, every manufacturer still chambers for the round. Wish I had one again, think i"ll change that!

ahhh...everyones a critic!!! Sooner or later i will learn to take the extra time to get the camera on the tripod!! On a positive note though, the 2006 DVD is coming along nicely.....4 bears and 1 moose kill so far this year....with deer getting going and a possible run for cow elk we should be able to put a few more kills on tape yet this year!
