Well I once again took a ton of time off work this year. I hunted many days in region 8 for mulies and ate that tag. I stopped in Region 3 on the way to Saskatchewan and shot a 4x4 there but that's another story...
This morning my partner, his wife and I went out to survey the area we normally hunt. We saw a couple Mulie Doe's and a small Whitetail buck. We headed back to town early for my partner to finish up some painting at the job site he'd been working at.
After lunch and a short nap we headed back out and went for a walk in the pasture/bush where I shot my 2003 Buck.
At one point we met up and both commented that we had both seen lots of sign. It was real windy and a tiny bit of snow was falling. I saw a Whitetail Doe that couldn't really decide which way to go and finally headed back into the thick bush.
We had walked around the bush and I had come back out onto the road and could see the truck a few hundred yards away.
I decided to head back into the bush and parallel the road. I followed a game trail that led into a slough. Once I entered the slough I was admiring a tree that was thrashed up pretty bad when about 30 yards in front of me was a buck on the ground. My first thought was he was dead being so close and his head was down. Now this is the second time I've had that happen to me... I shot a Mulie a couple years ago that was bedded in the sage brush..
So the buck stands up and as I'm taking the safety off takes a couple steps into the thick nasty bush surrounding the slough. I had to take a few steps to get into a better position. There wasn't much of a shooting lane so I took what I had and shot him low in the neck with the exit out the top of the far shoulder.
I didn't have much time to watch this buck or judge him but did see that his main beam was long and he had heavy mass. Close enough :)
For some reason I can't add the pictures so here are the links...
