A friend gave me a wolf pelt and the thing is absolutely gorgeous! I'd love to hang it on the wall in my den, but it's shedding like crazy. I don't know of any fur dealers or the like in my area. Any way to stop it from shedding without ruining the pelt? A silicone spray, or something totally different?

Thank you for any assistance
Cody

My girlfriend didn't like it on the dining room table while I decided how to stop it from shedding, so it's in the closet for the moment, but I'll get a photo up as soon as I can:)

Is it a fresh pelt or something old?

Is it Tanned?

It is tanned. It's been professionally done, so far as I know, but maybe hasn't been taken care of properly since then.

What might be happening is that it was acid-tanned, say in an Aluminum Sulfate solution (could be almost any acid for fur tanning) and the pelt wasn't rinsed well enough, leaving residue at the bases of the hair follicles. That residue will dry out and crystallize, but over time, as you hit different humidity levels, that crystal can re-hydrate and form an acid drop that eats away the follicle root. Another clean water rinse might slow it or stop it, but I'd consult a taxidermist. Ray Wiens is a sponsor here (he has a banner, etc) , he'll be able to help you out.

Thank you. I'll try to find a taxidermist in my area. Gotta be one somewhere, right?

possibly a improperly handled wolf hide prior to being tanned, quite possibly the hair was "slipping" prior to being tanned ?

if this is the case, the hide is garbage, nothing can be done to reverse the damage
