I use to take my 22 out on my cross country skis looking for bunnys...mainly because it was the only thing legal to shoot come January (that was edible). I have never seen jack rabbits or any wild rabbits in my area close to the size of the ones I have seen in Calgary on my buddy's front lawn.

Snowshoe hares here...I find them tastiest when shot in August and September...how were they in January, bosca?

Saw one today...nearly stepped on it b4 it bolted...was mostly in it's white phase already. Yep, they are tasty, but could be a bit bigger, at least they offer more meat than a grouse.

seems to be a lot of rabbits this season in r8. they head fast for the forest.

I've only seen 1 snowshoe so far this season. First time I ate rabbit too, man they sure are good. Where is everyone seeing all these region 8 rabbits?

Not sure that the rabbits I saw were snowshoe hare....cotton tail I think...Never managed to kill one. I only went out a few times. I,m guessing those little guys would have been a bit stringy.

We shot 3 on our hunting trip in the beginning of October. The small ones are tasty. I wont shoot the big snowshoe hares until I buy a pressure cooker.
Thats some tough meat.

I'm always on the lookout for those wascally wabbits.

Always have either a blunt or a special broadhead in the quiver ready to go.

We've seen and shot lots in Region 8. We find the vast majority of them are out on the old FSR, logging and skidder trails at just before dark. If you keep your eyes ahead of where your walking or quadding etc you will see them as they usually freeze on the spot and don't run back to cover until you get close. Easy shots with a 22.

Our Snowshoe's are midgets in comparison to Alta Jacks.

But maaaan, are they tasty!
Way better meat imo.

I see em up here in the 2-9, 2-11 but there either not as plentiful as grouse or a lot smarter cause I see more tracks than actual animals.

Bosca,
I like the idea of extending my hunting season as long as possible and going out on skis for snowshoe hare sounds like fun. Bringing home a few bunnies would be great; my wife makes a mean rabbit stew with Guinness. I would greatly appreciate any tips. Do you just ski around until you find tracks? What then?

Last hour of light, hit the roads and pretend you're hunting grouse.
