I woke up early Saturday morning and headed to Region 3 for mule deer.Drove up on a fresh skiff of snow in the dark and parked the truck. The dark sky was just starting to lighten as I headed up the mountain. The soft snow lightly crunched under my boots. The cold steel of the lever-action 45-70 felt good in my hand as I hiked up the snow-covered road along a fresh set of buck tracks just minutes old.The tracks turned off but I kept going up the hill to a little meadow with a spring where I would wait. The snow was much deeper in the meadow where I set up.I leaned my rifle against a small pine tree and pulled out my grunt tube.I let out some grunts and snorted while stomping the ground.I then stood and enjoyed the beauty of the cold winter morning.Ten minutes later the buck appeared at the edge of the meadow. I reached for my gun as I saw the large rack.I set the rifle between my knees and checked for the four points that I was already sure were there. My heart pounded as I put the binoculars back in the pouch and slowly raised the 45-70 up.Mere seconds had passed since he first appeared at less than 100 yards and now I could hear him grunting and coming straight at me 25 yards. As he turned to my right and behind the pine tree I found an opening and fired behind his front leg.The buck took three steps back and went down.I stood still for a few minutes and then thanked the Lord for this fine animal and the meat that we would enjoy.

Congrats on getting a nice buck and also on a well written story!

That said, I think you would be better off thanking your 45-70 than the Lord, as at least it played some part in harvesting a great buck.
