After many years of thinking about it, we finally headed to the Peace River area for a deer hunt. There were 5 of us. My Dad, my youngest daughter Erika, nephew Daniel, hunting partner Alison and myself.

Our goals on this trip were to hopefully get Erika and Daniel their first bucks and learn about the area. Some nice grain fed meat would also be a bonus.

We were very fortunate to have permission to hunt a large piece of property. The first morning was spent getting to know the property boundary’s. In the afternoon we split up and headed to different areas.

Alison and Daniel were hunting together and found the honey hole. They spotted a nice buck and the stalk was on. They closed the distance belly crawling behind a low rise and Daniel made a great shot on his first buck. He was laying down when he shot and got a little scope bite. You couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.

The next morning Erika, Alison and I headed out to see if we could find one for Erika. Bingo! A bunch of deer way across the field.
We headed around the edge of the field to close the distance but as we got closer the wind became an issue and we were looking into the sun. Ya I know, but it was the only approach to get within range. We crawled along in a ditch until the deer started to get nervous then set up. Erika was going to shoot first but a little buck fever held her up. She told Alison to go ahead so she shot and dropped a nice buck. Then Erika got settled and made a great shot and dropped her first buck. Well now there was some Ya-Hooing and High 5’s and hugging all around.

Then it was Dads turn. We were checking out the fields at daybreak and spotted a decent buck. A quick stalk and shot and Dad had his buck. He hadn’t shot a deer in 16 years. He was happy. More Hi-Fives.

Now I was the only one left with a tag. Erika came with me the next day and we looked at some bucks but I held off. On the last morning Erika and I headed out again and the rest of the gang went to a different area to look for whitetails. We spotted a group of deer at day break with a decent buck among them. I let him walk and we carried on. We checked out some more country then on the way back I had another look at the buck and decided he would taste pretty good. A quick stalk and one shot and my deer was down. Erika and I had a little party’ then got on with de-boning the fifth deer in 5 days. With 5 shots I might add. Good shooting all around.

I’ve always hunted deer in the mountains so this was a new experience for me, and I have to say it was fun to see so many deer!
