Went out this morning, leaving my house at 4 am. I drove along our road into our spot and saw a tone of big tracks, so I parked the truck and My friend and I took each end of the cut block. I hiked up my side and saw nothing for sign and headed back down. My friend said he saw lots of tracks and started to follow them in the cut block. As I was making my way to my friends side of the cut along the road and hear some rustling behind me. I stop and listen, there it is again! Turn around and see this nice buck lower his head and walk under a low branch right onto the road 20 yards from me! I looked at him he looked at me. I feel my hart start to pound, in my head I tell my self "steps".

Step one: calm down
Step two: remove scope cover
Step three: aim/flick off safety
Step four: Broad side shot!

I see him hunch up and run across the road up a hill and fall over at the top. After I am sure he is expired I go and get my friend to check out this buck together.

EDIT: more pics on page 2

Great Buck! Where in the valley? Just estimate, don't give up the spot. Nicely done. I don't have any mount advice except that you should do it!

Don't mean to pry but what MU. This looks like a solid Blacktail deer and is very impressive. Some nice head gear there. Very well done.

Now I gotta wipe up the drool on my keyboard !!

Well its not a secret spot by any means, just pure right time right place and a early morning. We where in Skagit Valley in between silver lake and the Park. He walked out onto the main road, so I don't think I am giving away a honey hole. lol. I think he is a 6x5, he has one clubish branch with 3 1.5" long tines on the end of it. Thanks to all who look.

i took a nice bt buck in the first couple yrs of hunting. my hunting group convinced me to get it mounted. and because of a bit of misfortune due to someone elses actions didn't get it mounted. could never find a cape that was the same colour or large enough.

Mount the basterd, you'll never regret it!

nice buck!

That is a beauty right there!! Congrats.

By the way I think a really well down euro mount looks just as impressive as a head mount, especially on real heavy gnarly horned buck like that

Not sure where your BT boundry's are or where you shot it, but if it qualify's as a BT I'd do a nice shoulder mount for sure, very nice deer

Damn, looking online, I should have gone below the shoulder. I went just above, hope this doesn't screw me! If it does I will also be happy with a full skull on placard. This is my second deer so I am really thrilled and thankful. here are some more pics

Well that's one area to take off the list, for two reasons. One you've got the only monster, two, everyone else on here want's his brother LOL Congrats on being good and lucky at just the right time. BTW, he belongs on the wall, you won't often find BT's like that on any road!!

Piggly-fricking-wiggly.....What a geat deer....

You could always do a euro and then go full head mount years down the road.... Don't give it to your dog as a denta-bone..!!!

Well the Wife has spoken and said that it is not going to be euro mounted and a full mount must be done because she feels it may be my biggest buck for a very long time.

Great blacktail! Be hard to top that f it's your 2nd buck! :)

If you cut the cape in front of the shoulders, there isn't much to work with. Might want to see if you can beg, borrow or steal a shoulder cape form a buddy! :)

But mount it, for sure.

Take him into ray wiens and have him shoulder mounted... He's got a couple nice blacktail
capes if yours is short.

Wow! Cranker. I've seen a few deer out of that valley show up on here over the last few years (natebavis etc), but I had no Idea that they got that big out there.

I know you are in the hybrid zone, and I can see the tail cutoff in the one pic, but can you include it in a pic? I want to see how it looks.

I sent an email to Ray, if the cape is too short I don't want to buy or use a donor cape. My second favorite option is a full skull on placard.

Well the Wife has spoken and said that it is not going to be euro mounted and a full mount must be done because she feels it may be my biggest buck for a very long time.

So you said where you got the deer but what about the wife? Where can a guy get a wife like that!? Awesome!

Ya, that buck is the huge!!!!!

GRIZZEZE
11-20-2011, 09:04 PM
congrats on the blacktail
if the cape is too short, then just get the taxidermist to cut the form down to match the cape. You won't get a full shoulder mount, but it will still look great.

Nice buck! Congrats.

OK I'm gonna get friggin roasted for saying this, but: Go Euro mount. They look so much more primal and raw and have so much more of a modest edge. Cost aside, head mounts are obtrusive and sometimes even borderline cheesy IMO. Sorry, just giving the straight goods.

Now I'm going to run away while all the head mount fans start throwing rocks at me :) .

11-21-2011, 03:18 AM
I agree with your wife head mount for sure..

Looking_4_Jerky
11-21-2011, 02:07 PM
OK, I did not see the part about your lady laying the law down. That changes everything!

My preference for euro mounts aside, you'd be a nutcase to disregard the wife's request!

HEAD MOUNT THAT SUCKA!

Well, I went to see Ray tonight, he has some cool stuff at his place. Anyways I did cape it out much to high and he couldn't do much with it. He gave me the option of using another cape that he had, but I would rather have "more" of my own animal by having a euro mount done. I will still have the option down the road if I decide to use a donor cape. Sorry to disappoint all the people that voted for full mount, your opinions are still appreciated.
