Went out for a day hunt yesterday up east harrison and my buddy shot his first buck ever a nice blacktail spike so we figured we should get him anothers tag I didnt plan on shooting anything that i wouldnt put on my wall that day so maybe he would get a double. we pulled out of harisson and headed up the #7 got out of the truck and started hiking 3,5 km later i spotted a doe and man she was lookin for action. i figured there was a buck close so i started scanning the area there was a group of cottenwoods with a funny branch sticking out of the side so i thought.. holy#$%& it a big one he stepped out but the hot doe was blocking my shot i hid behind a tree and waited 15min went by and finally she moved and BANG he went 30 yards and dropped hes a 4x4 with double brows green scored at 173 and net 163 I never thought we had bucks this big so close to home hes a hybrid short in the face and black and brown down the back of the tail

Incredible animal. Good for you. What a tank. Your going to have a million people up east harrison now. I work up both sides of harrison and cottonwood like that does not look familiar. If I read correctly you got the spike up harrison and then drove up the #7 to another spot and got that cranker. Good things come to those that put others first.

I cant stop staring at the pic of that deer. Thats a buck of a lifetime for this area. Your putting him on the wall I take it. He deserves a spot with its own light showcaseing him.

If you shot a hammer buck, would you put the right directions to the spot you killed it????

My thoughts exactly! Me thinks maybe someone shot a nice muley buck in the Interior, but what do I know? I don't hunt those little guys.

silvertip,
How many times have you seen guys on this site trying the pull a good joke???? Wasn't there just a bunch of guys with their panties all in a wad over someone who shot a highland steer with a bow???? So whats the first thing that comes to my mind when I see a buck that clearly looks like a decent sized muley being claimed to be a blacktail??? On top of that he gives the directions of where this huge blacktail is killed. Then later in the post makes sure it is mentioned another time the exact location the buck is killed. Seems like a good internet joke to me. Go ahead and be like the ones in the other threads that fall for the joke. I myself will wait to see what further comes out of this thread. :)

silvertipp
11-15-2011, 09:35 PM
well you know what they say about assumeing
Any how a buck like that down here is is a lot harder to find than your 200 class animals up there

If that is true then all the more to think someone is playing a joke when they tell the exact location numerous times in the same thread where the said buck was killed.

You shmucks know how to ruin a good thread! Here's a young guy, working hard to find a trophy and when he finds success you guys drag it through the mud. Good job, way to encourage. Who gives a rip how close to the line it is. Its obviously a mature buck and obviously got some characteristics of both. Its a great buck, especially in and around the lower mainland.

Great looking buck congratulations hes a beauty for sure. I can't remember the measurements off hand but Rick Berreth told me there is a measurement taken between the antlers at the base to determine what class of deer it will be scored as. Mulie or BT. I was wondering if anyone knows about this and can add more info thanks

YES, He took this Buck in the valley! I know for a fact. I am all tagged out and he was asking for a good spot for a daytrip, so I gave him my driving directions, and the hiking directions into the area. This is not a guy that would shoot somewhere else and post it up as a local.

It's a nice spot he was in, And we've taken a few large ones out of there, but nothing that big. We'll be working it over a little harder next year.

Even if it is a hybrid, if it was shot inside the blacktail "zone" it would be considered a blacktail for scoring, wouldn't it? Should go #2 or #3 in the BC book if it's in the zone. :)

Great buck, well done!

Man am I glad I opened this thread, great buck, awesome job on it! I think I would have spooked it having to wait 15 min, I probably would have had to pee or something! My take on it is that it IS a blacktail but even if not it is an awesome buck and will make a handsome mount. And now I can follow the drama too, life is sweet...

Excellent work. You need to realize he did not only get that size due to only genetics. He got that big because he was a smart animal . You out foxed him with a little help from testosterone . Never seen one down here like it.

Thats a beauty. Enjoy it. And dont worry what anyone says. Your hunt and your memories. Cant take that from you. A few years ago I shot a pig of a blacktail on the sunshine coast. Had a few on here posting it must be a hybrid or a mulie. Couldnt be a blackie. LOL......ignore them

Really nice buck! Congrats. Either way it is a great accomplishment.

I don't hunt BTs and I have not seen scads of them over the years, so I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but I can't help but think it looks exactly like all the mulies I've ever seen. Like others have said though, who cares? A mid 170s mulie is still Cranker material for most (I know it is for me)!

If it is a BT it's certainly legendary to any that I've ever seen. Question though: if it's a hybrid, what would one enter it to Boone & Crockett as?

British Columbia — Starting at the Washington-British Columbia border, blacktail deer range runs west of the height of land between the Skagit and the Chilliwack Ranges, intersecting the Fraser River opposite the mouth of Ruby Creek, then west to and up Harrison Lake to and up Tipella Creek to the height of land in Garibaldi Park and northwesterly along this divide past Alta Lake, Mt. Dalgleish and Mt. Waddington, thence north to Bella Coola. From Bella Coola, the boundary continues north to the head of Dean Channel, Gardner Canal and Douglas Channel to the town of Anyox, then due west to the Alaska-British Columbia border, which is then followed south to open water. This boundary excludes the area west of the Klesilkwa River and the west side of the Lillooet River.

This is how B&C defines what is what. If the deer was taken within these boundaries, I think they just score it as a blacktail. I don't have a current edition of the BC book but 163 should put it in the top 5 if it was killed in the blacktail boundaries. I don't think they do some secret DNA test to determine what it is. :)
