I was once told that big cats like wood piles... But that's all I've got on em'
I've seen only one lynx in my life but I didn't have a tag so no shots fired.
If I wanted to get one mounted what rifle should I use? Or a shotgun with buckshot?
I've got a .22 LR and a .270 but was afraid that the .270 would cause to much damage to the hide.
What elevation? Snow good or bad? Around a water source? Open areas (cut blocks, power lines)?
What should I be looking for?
I remember that the cat I saw left virtually no tracks. It was an oddball though just walking down the middle of a road on a sunny day. Wasn't too worried about me.
Much appreciated in advance! Remember no "DUMP questions" unless they aren't asked.

I was on the same quest as you a couple years ago.

I went and found an area with as much rabbit sign as I could, rabbit tracks in the snow, chewed bark etc. I then set up in the ditch of that road with a rabbit distress call. Not 5 minutes of calling and I had killed my first lynx, it was really lucky, but i'll take it any day! I've tried many times since then with no luck, so keep trying! you may get lucky and bump into one on the road, as I have several times!

I had heard how thin skinned cats were so I chose a 22. It took 1 shot through the eye at about the distance of a single lane logging road (ditch to ditch) and dropped on the spot :D

I too wanted a full mount, but decided going with a rug, as it was a female. If I get a big tom i'll be mounting it! Make sure you keep the skull!

Good Luck!

You said you shot it in the eye? That cranium looks intact... Would a typical lung/ heart shot with a .22 puncture?

Yup I did, if look closely at the picture you can see it on it's right eye! Sorry I only have a picture of another one I have. Mine has a hole through the eye socket and half the back of the skull missing :)

For your other question, the day I brought my lynx to a friend to get skinned (he's a trapper) another fellow brought in a cat he shot for chasing his chickens. 1 shot with the 22 in the boiler room, it went 15 yards and piled up

LOL
if you shoot a lynx with a 30.06 or .270 there will be a huge hole or pieces to sow back together!
not a good idea !

^^^ Yup!

I've ripped coyotes in half with my 3006, I cant imagine what it would do to a cat!

I plan on using my .243 on bobcat this year
but will be firing a 60 gr bullet over 11.5 gr trail boss at 2000fps mv which should be fur friendly(.22wmr velocity)

I shot my lynx with my .22lr through the boiler room. I've never seen something jump so high. Can't really give you too much advise as mine was just a chance encounter. I also would recommend going with the rug, I'm really happy with the way mine turned out, and as mentioned be sure to keep the skull.

A friend of mine and I were out hunting wolves once. We saw a lynx working its way down the far side of the lake 1-2km's away. We started whailing on the dying rabbit call and managed to get him to come in to about 7 yards. My friend had a tag in his pocket but unfortunately the season had ended the previous week.

Hunting pred's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, make sure you TAG UP!
You never really know what will show up.

I have a mediocre digi-call (Johnny Stewart Prey Master). It's pulled in Yotes, Raccoons and Bobcats.
With the kitty's, It's also a good idea to have a visual attractor of some fashion - I use a long feather tied to a stick, sometimes a CD. As the attractor flutters in the breeze, The idea is that it acts like a flasher on a salmon line (curiosity killed the cat).

Look for rabbit sign and cover (old slash piles, scrub, etc). Look for kitty prints  and set up in a clearing of some sort with you well hidden. Pay attention to the edges of the clearing and use binos - When they show, it's like they *magically* show up - I often think I've missed seeing more than the ones I have.

.22 win mag is the answer for Bobcat and Lynx.

My 2 cents for the day

Yup - If all you're hoping for is Kitty, a .22 that's dial in is all that's needed.
But I personally wouldn't try it on a Wolf or Yote, if one should happen to show up....
