So I made my way out to region 3 for my annual mulie hunt. This is the latest i've been to my spot since I've started hunting this area-usually i bag a deer in sept, but i figured this year i'd hold out for a big buck.
Although he's not huge, he's the biggest Mulie i've shot to date-so i'm happy-and i've got a freezer full of stinky deer to boot.
started on the morning of the 10th-slow i might add- as the only animal i saw was a lone coyote. Kinda took the wind out of my sails and i thought about tagging him but didn't want to spook the area. So after seeing nothing for a few hours all morning i headed back to camp for a nap.
Woke up-burned back out to a different area and started glassing for the last few hours of the day. a few grunts and rattles w the odd bleat and...Nothing. Feeling abit dejected I started to make the long walk back to the quad. From my vantage point there was one corner I couldn't see from where I was glassing earlier, so i figured i'd stop and have a quick look on the way back.
Bingo-about 800 yards away is a buck walking directly at me. I quickly see that he's legal, and on a mission. it's the last hour of light and I have a lot of ground to cover. Decision time! Go or wait til morning. So i start hoofing it. He's gone into a valley and can't see me and it's rolling hill with deadfall the whole way.
By about 500 yards of sprinting into the wind(which is howling right at me) i'm tired. I start climbing out of this valley and I spot him in the binos around 250 yards out. Drop the pack-lie down for the shot and...he stops behind the only tree in the cutblock!!WTF.
I watch him watching something and then he takes off down into another valley outta sight. More decisions!!. Its getting dark; Do I wait for him to climb back up towards me, or go see where he is?
The whole time he's been coming straight at me... sooo...I should wait but it's getting dark fast so i go for it. I run up to where i think he is and--he's not there. double WTF.
I look right, nothin-i look left and there's a 2 point running...but not from me. He's running from the 4 point who's hot on his a$$ and looks pissed.
Now's the time I think, he's a 100 yards out and moving away quick. so I give the trusty baaahhhh. he stops and looks around. I'm aiming, but i'm the idiot that's still standing and my hearts thumpin. no way i'm gonna make this shot. so I sit as he starts to move again. Get set, Baahhhh again, he stops again and one shot from the remmy 3006 puts him down.
Although at first i thought i missed cuz he just disappeared-but then i notice he's on the ground and he's raking it with his rack. I move up closer-and one more shot sends him up.
He was a long drag back to the quad. Truth be told I went and got the quad and brought it as close as the deadfall would let meand it was still long. I thought about boning him out but there's something about having a deer hanging in the garage whole that makes it that much more rewarding. no what i mean?
Not too many scenic pics as it was getting pretty dark by that time and i still had to go find my pack. Shootin deer in the morning is so much easier.
