WOW Nice bear MR.Dean ......Nice Pictures

Thanks.

I shot him with one of my hand-loads which consits of the following:

- Winchester case
- Winchester primer
- IMR 3031 powder
- Speer 400gr FN jacketed

The load runs a bit over 2000fps and was developed for accuracy. That bear above, was hit from a range of 65 yds and pretty much dropped where he fed, with the exception of falling down into the ditch ( baztard ). The bullet retained almost all of it's weight (-7 grs.) and is pictured below.

It was a DEEP ditch,,,,,,,, but I was able to winch 'em out w/ the Jeep.

As for the load.... It's my own developement and exceeds book maximums; I won't suggest another to go ahead with it.
What I will do is find the book load, post it, and you can take it from there.

Hmmm...

Moose, elk, grizzly, and quite a few deer and black bears. Used mostly the 400 grain Speer FN, and 350 A-Frame, as well as some Garrett Hammerhead stuff.

I've only shot water jugs with mine so far, hope that will change soon. I got enough grouse in the freezer so I didn't shoot at them today with the marlin, it was very tempting though.

Don't own one and never shot at game with one. Tried one out at the Victoria Fish and Game range a few years ago and it was cool. The sound it made when it crushed the 200 yard gong was killer!!

Had a 45/70 built on a single shot Martini action about 30 years ago. Used it on a bunch of black bear in the east. Never needed a second shot. Was pushing handloads, seems to me 450 grains but, after all this time, I could be wrong. Best blackie was a shade over 350 pounds. No pictures, sad to say.

Not Needed IMO unless your after Cape Buffalo, Elephant, Alaskan Browns - Things that have 1m thick bones.

Barnes does make a factory load with the VOR-TX 300 gr. bullet. I just shot it today at the range. Deadly looking bullet, and pretty accurate. I'm going hunting with it on Wednesday. My first hunt with my new Marlin 1895GBL. You can pick that ammo up at International. That's where I got it.

Hey, it's just one mans opinion.

Back to the load: I looked up my data and made a HORRIBLE mistake on powder type. Being a Moderator, I was able to go into both yours and my posts to make the needed corrections. It's in fact IMR 3031 and NOT 4831 - My Bad.

I used the manual of "Modern Reloading" to base my initial tests from. They show a max load for a 405gr jacketed bullet, to be 51.5grs of IMR 3031. They also show a CUP of 27,000 and velocity is stated @ 1795 fps.

I down-sized the bullet weight by 5 grains for my load and added to the powder charge incrementally as I found the load to 'string'. I caution the people that get into experimenting with loads - You really need a grasp of what your doing and because it works in mine, doesn't mean it'll work in yours and I'll leave that part of the experiment with you.

Cheers.

I believe it will be Remington brass, as they purchased Barnes, but it might be "Barnes" brass made by Remington :) Not sure though.

I've only shot deer and a coyote or two with mine. I load either 400gr Speers or 405gr RemSP's over 3031 in Win Brass with CCI Primers. Used to load it hot but not even close anymore. I'm almost tempted to try some Trapdoor loads cause I really wanna recover a bullet, they always sail off into the wilderness after punching clean holes.
Great cartridge, fun to load with all types of loads, and always deadly.

The box was something like $59. Very pricey. I just got the rifle, but I will try to start loading for next year so I won't have to pay that anymore.

I absolutley LOVE shooting my 45-70. Killed a few blackies with it and a grizz at 20 yds a few years ago. Hit him in the boiler, he stood up, spun on his back feet and was dead before his front feet hit the ground.

With this rifle:

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Springfield_1.jpg

My Model 1873 Trap Door Springfield in 45-70.

Went up to visit Buddies on Banks Island, NWT and since I had recently acquired the ol' smokepole, I was itching to shoot something around the size of a buffalo with it. Muskox were as close as we got up there, so...
Spent a few days looking, then wandered into this fellow with but a single buddy. Belly-crawled through the snow to about 85 yards, lined him up, and let one fly. 300 grain Federal Hi-Shok caught him just behind the shoulder, and he did a complete somersault, landed on his back - no wiggle! Impressive!

So impressive my Inuit Buddy HAD to try it out on a bear a few days later. Front quartering shot to the chest with pretty much the same result. Nose plant - no wiggle. He very much wanted the rifle after that, but I declined! Still shoot it occasionally, but it surely isn't suited to wandering around in the field with!

Cheers,
Nog
