Hey everyone,

Trying to help my father in-law pick out a new hand held GPS for hunting this year.

I've haven't stayed up to date on these things in a few years. Can you please give me some recommendations for a good easy to use model.

Cheers,

I was looking at the Oregon 550t or the different 62 models. What do you like about the Dakota....

I have an oregon 450 and love it . I would not spend the extra on the T model as you can buy the backroads map chip and plug it in . the chip is way beter than the topo that is included with the "t" model
GPScity.ca had the best prices

I was in the market for a gps and a spot, so i bought the delorme pn-60w. the gps isnt the best on the market, but I wanted a spot and this combo made sence. the custom text messaging capability is really useful.

I have a Garmin 62 s and have a backroads mapbook map pack. It is a pretty slick unit. While it is a somewhat more clunky interface than some of the touchscreen models, I find it just about perfect for my needs.

Touchscreen gps and rain dont mix. Try wiping off the rain and see what happens.

I just got the Montana 650. Love the larger screen. So far, so good.
Loaded the BCBR, and all works as advertised.
A nice feature having a 5megapixel camera in it as well.
A little more money, but this is not the cheapest hobby in the world either.

hmmmm I have always been a fan of Lowrance..however the new units seem to be going backwards....music options etc..sheeeesh..

I have a Lowrance thats several years old I uploaded a much more comprehensive map to it..

As I havent been looking I havnt been researching..how in depth is the Canadian map? is it got elevation?? and overhead photo?? just trying to keep up to date and now a days technology is changing daily..

cheers, thanks

Another vote for the Garmin 62S.
I use it in the bush every day for work and find it to be the best one I have bought yet. I think I own about a dozen Garmin units split between myself and employees. The 62S seems to be about the best unit produced to date when you take price and durability into account. I have never had a problem with loss of satellites and even use these units to GPS roads and cutblock boundaries. Never would have done that a couple years ago.

I have a preference for the Rino 530 Hcx with the backroads mapbook... same as the 60csx ( predecessor to the 62s) but with the built in GMRS radio that allows you to ping the locations of your hunting buddies... I was so impressed with it on a hunting trip that I bought another one for the wife for when we are out quadding so we can explore separately
