Sunday Fishing

So, I want to head out fishing Sunday, NO FLY FISHING. Any tips on where in the south island is hot right now, preferably with retention as I would like to put something on the BBQ. Lake or river, I am not picky, but I have limited gear, and limited knowledge. I don't have a boat but I do have waders. I am just getting into fishing and hunting (clearly) and would appreciate some direction for this weekend.
