Can Grizzly bear and Black Bear breed together this could happen????? Have offspring together? Just curious any real bear guys out there in B.C. land, ever heard of this being possible up to now?

No it is not possible, they have attempted this in zoos before with no success. Grizzly and Polar bear on the other hand have been successfully bred in captivity and recently proven to interbreed in the wild as well.

Pennsylvania gets them big, 500-600lbs and more, why you ask? Long growing season, mild winters and TONS OF FOOD from agriculture. Not saying we don't have em big here, just know that 600 isn't that rare in the grand scheme of things.

Did a quick google search and found the record is 880lbs (http://www.americanbear.org/Size.htm)

Very best,

Yeah, I htink he was just makign a joke.

I htink that as hunters we shoudl discourage the use of the term "Great Spirit Bear" actually...

It's just a black bear wiht a genetic defect..8-)

That is kinda up in the air.........it's an Actual colour phase...Alot of Black Bears carry the Gene but it rarely shows up outside of BC's Coast ? Or so I've read. Kinda like Most Cinnamon Bears are found in the Dryer Interior Regions too. I'm no Biologist so I don't know why ? Maybe Both parents need to carry the Gene for it to show up ?

At any rate the Kermode is just hair Colour.....like a Blonde, redhead or Brunette:)
Not a "defect" like Albinoism.

This months copy of Bear Hunting Magazine has an article about a fella that shot a hybrid grizzly/black bear in 1986. The bear had genetic traits of both grizzly and black bear and the "experts" couldn't readily identify it as either according to the article. When the skull was originally measured by Boone and Crocket it scored 26 3/16-inches so it raised some alarm bells because it was being entered as a black bear. The article goes on to say that initial DNA testing from the skull couldn't prove it to be either a black bear or a grizzly. The fella figured live weight in the 600 to 800 lbs range and the original field measurments where 8-feet, 8-inches. Its a good article and my theory is when nature is invloved never say never.

My goodness 165 kilos man. Probably way more, the co said. How big do you think black bears get, for goodness sake. lol. How many people actually weighed a bear on a butcher's scale probably nil. Jelly bean. way off ness on your guessing lol. maybe? Weighed even one? not.

Jelly come on down to Poco, the black thats tearing the shit out of my buddies barry farm and bee hives this past couple of weeks is HUGE, their is a game cutter the next property over that has seen him and said he will go 500lbs! No shooting area and he knows it!!

Jel, you obviously haven't seen a "large" blacky yet, 165 kilos isn't big, it would be an average yogi, maybey 165 kilos out of the den in the spring would be respectable because you know it will double in size but after a few months, no way just average.

We took a pretty good blackie from our farm whole to a butcher shop. This was a spring bear and it weighed in at 460 lbs. Would have been well over 500 in the fall. We have killed bigger ones than this but not taken them out whole.

All the dope smokers up east barrier lakes would not know a big bear if they saw one. All people always say it was a huge bear at least 500 pounds, but when its kill its probably half the weight.

Even hunters over estimate big time. The taxidermist in kelowna even put in a scale at his shop becuase he was tired of the arguments over weight when guys brought in 400 pound deer, 200lb cougars and 500 pound bears. He said guys will phone him and say they shot a 200lb cat and they are bring it in. The mighty pussy cat tipped the scales at 130lb.

What is the record weight of an American black bear?

The world record weight for an American black bear is 880 pounds. This was the recorded weight of a 10.75 year-old male bear shot in North Carolina in November 1998.A black bear was hit and killed by a car near Winnipeg Canada, in 2001. The official recorded weight was 856.5 pounds, but it is estimated that the live weight of this large male was more than 886 pounds. The driver was not injured and there appeared to be little damage to the Mazda.

Little damage to the MAZDA?
He killed an almost 900 pound bear...and there's little damage to the MAZDA??? I hit a 170 lb deer, and wrote off my '91 Gran prix! lol. I was out 200 clams!

I have hunted up there a bit over the years. Parents live in Barriere and I grew up there. Hunted up on the north end of East Barriere Lake and I have seen the biggest blackie in my life up there. It did not stick around and I couldn't tell you the weight but it was big. Was hoping I had 5 more seconds and then a few guys to help me lift the bugger into my truck.

We gotta see that boar, proguide66, cuz up east of Barrierre it's a serious matter and we need to see the size of a 500 pound plus black marauder to see the potential of a cattle killing collosses apparently much worse than his father, the elusive, son of Ursus--"The Haunting"

You can see the bear up close and personal by the East Barriere lake area
Well......there goes the neighborhood !

I've taken a few "Good" Blackies outta East Lake area.....one right above the lake on the Upper john FSR ! He went 6'8" and was one Big Fat SOB !
We had to roll him into the truck.
Skull was BC Book by an inch.........but the 280 hole through it made it unscoreable for some reason ? Long story....

There was a Huge Sow many locals knew of (I'm talking +7').......we spooked her up off the lower John right above the lake quite a few times but she always had cubs, some years she even had three. Miserable old Gal she was. Eventually she wasn't seen anymore. There are some really good old den sites not far from the lake if you know where to go.

My best Bud's family had a Cabin on East lake for years....practically grew up there....we explored the $hit outta that country as kids.

Once the lodge and hydro appeared, plus all the Yuppies and such that came with it, things sure took a downhill slide as far as Bears went......sure there's still bears but not like it was 15+ years ago;)

proguide66,
Helluva bear there ! .......many folks argue and bicker about the existence of 8' Blackies.

Those of us that have seen them know better ;-)

1 of my hunters shot a blackie that went 6'8" last year. Had to opologize because it wasn't 7 foot or better like the other 8 I guided for last spring on the Charlottes. I estimated the weight of these bears between 400 and 500 pounds and all skulls were between 19.5 and 21 inches. The biggest one was 7'6". Even though the bears there have huge bodies the skulls seem "small" for the body sizes. If any one wants to post the pics from these links go ahead.

:)Nice looking Bear. What general area if you don't mind my asking? I've seen a couple of decent ones on a local logging road area here on the island and as a result, I'm giving serious consideration to trying for a Spring 'Pepperoni' Black Bear this year.

Region 6. Late October. Goat hunting.

So I log in the HBC to check things out. First thing I see on the mainland BC page is the title to this thread. My eys can't help but be drawn to the title, with its bold print, incindiery language and exclamation points. I ask myself, "Have I inadvertantly wandered into the Fox News site?" "Has the American media invaded a humble BC hunting forum too?" (not that the Canadian media is much better...). Where oh where will end?

Shame on you Jel. Such inflammatory BS should be left to the mainstream media - I for one am much more comfortable with it there, at least I (sorta) understand it there. Its embarassing to see that sort of thing on this site - it stinks of a city boy's uninformed chatter.

The best thing about this is that we got to see some photos of some big bears - nice work boys --- ELUSUVE AGRESSIVE MAURAUDING CHILDREN EATING LEVIATHINS they might have been. (notice the past tense - they die like anything else).
