Here is a goat we have found. Thinking of going after it in the morning if we can close the distance. Do you think it's a nanny or a Billy? One of the goats may be a totally different goat. Need your opinion, big boar.

The goat in the first picture looks different than the goat in the third. Bases look a lot smaller and farther apart. Pics 2,3,4 look like a Billy. Hard to say on pic 1. Could be that I'm looking on my iPhone and not my computer. Your original post says they might be different goats. Is this what you are referring to?

Hmmm, I think 1,2 and 3 are Billy's based on beard length, body mass and pronounced "pantaloons". # 4 is iffy for me, kinda blurry, but could be a nanny?
Looks like the Billy has everything but horn size. Doesn't seem to be a lot of mass or length there. Just my amateur opinion.
Would make a helluva nice mount Dave.

The pictures were taken from different times and angles on the same heard when we lost sight of them for a while. Those are the biggest goats on the mountain though. We think there is a Billy there, but thought we would ask for opinions. Leaving tomorrow at first light. Will post results after.

There's quite a gap between the bases and they seem to thin out and curve a bit more near the tips. Blurry pic and I tend to weigh on the side of caution.

I don't know goats at all - never hunted them. Found this: Mountain Goat ID (http://wildlife.state.co.us/SiteCollectionDocuments/DOW/Education/pdf/HunterEducation/MountainGoatIDQuizWEBRev09102010.pdf)

Are you hunting where J. guided you before?

IMO. If your looking for a trophy, your first impression should be HolyS!, not, "well....hmmm, maybe". Hope it happens for you!

Were looking for a first goat for my friend. He doesn't want to make a mistake. Any good Billy will do. We are in the EK yes. This hunt has been incredible so far. Can't wait till first light.

Pics 1, 2, and 3 are a nanny. Pic # 4 I *think* is a different goat and may be a billy, but it's hard to tell with that grainy pic.

Very tough to tell horn mass, length, can you see any scent glands? Look for a loner, creamy or yellowish in color, compare the way they piss.

DON"T SHOOT A NANNY !

Dave Id like to suggest a few sites I used prior to my hunt to research on Goats behaviors and most importantly sex identification , PM me and i'll send them to you for future Goat hunts.

OK picture number one is clearly a nanny, the wide distance between her thin horns are a big give away. ALSO the diameter of the base of a nannies horn is normally the size of her eye . AND her horns will have a sharp curve

picture 2,3 4 clearly billies!
Picture 2 its the large bases. Picture 3 its the thick bases and close together horn distance, Picture 4 Bases and the curve through the horn length

picture two, three:

see the Large bases, larger than eye and the Horns are base heavy with more taper from
base to tip.

Really hard to tell from your pictures. I don't consider myself an expert on the goats but I spent a lot of time and looked over a lot of goats this year. In my opinion pic 1 is a nanny, I wouldn't even give it a second look. Pic 2 looks most like a billy, has some mass to it's basses (larger than the eye) and it's coat looks a little more yellowish but this could just be the lighting. I don't think it's a great scoring goat as far as book goes, but it does look like a mature animal (note the length of the face). Pic 3 and 4 both look like young animals (short faces 1-2 years old maybe) and may be young billy's (some mass at the bases; same goat perhaps) but I think you could find something better.

It's really hard to tell based on your pictures, but that's what I get out of them.

Pic 1 = nanny. Small bases and wide gap between horns.
Pic 2-4 - billy. larger bases, horn curve looks right and narrow gap between horns.

Of the pic's, I think I can say 4 is a bill, fer sure.

The other ones leave me wanting more info.

#1 is a nanny, based on the following characteristics: horns flare out to the sides; significant gap between the bases; horns don't hold their mass (you can see how quickly they taper just above the base). The other characteristic to look for is whether the horns curve smoothly throughout their length (billy), or have a sharper curve at the tip (nanny). Non-horn characteristics to distinguish nannies from billies: nannies squat to urinate, while billies stretch out; billies tend to be dirtier and yellower; larger groups of goats tend to be nannies/kids; billies tend to have a more pronounced hump and are blockier.

#2-4 appear to be billies, but I'd want a clearer look before I pulled the trigger.

Good luck to your friend.

Hard to tell from the grainy pics....but here's a reminder to never go by the bases alone.......

Photos #2 & #3 are likely billies but no glands are evident . . . #4 is a teenager (2 or 3 year old). The horns shown in SSS's photo looks bigger than any of them! I know of a guy recently that got fooled by a dry old nanny with a roman nose and thick horns with very little curvature.

The first 3 goats are the same goat. Goat 4 is different.

And.....

There is a dead 9.5 inch Billy in the back of the truck.

Will post pics soon.

Definitely the hardest hunt of my friends life. 3 hour stalk, 4 hour recovery, back to the trailer 3 hours after dark.
