I never saw a wild thing

sorry for itself.

A small bird will drop frozen

dead from a bough

without ever having felt

sorry for itself.

D. H. Lawrence

I've never been much of a poetry guy, but this one has always held some meaning for me. It also, in my opinion, encapsulates the essence of a proper mountain goat hunt: if you want one, you have to go get one. And no one, least of all the goat, takes pity on your hardship.

This was my second solo mountain goat hunt, for my third goat. It was five solid field days, in the coldest, soggiest, foggiest, sh*ttiest, G*d-damn weather I've ever been stuck in.

I destroyed a bunch of gear including my new Kuiu Chugach pants, my SPOT transmitter, my Nikon Coolpix camera, as well a few toenails and whatever was left of the meniscus in my right knee. And it was the most satisfying hunt I've ever been on.

I hope you enjoy the pics.

Congrats . . . thanks for sharing. Gotta love that country and all that comes with it!

I can see why you went solo; not many willing or able participants for what you just accomplished in that unforgiving terrain and weather.

Amazing! how do you possibly pick out a white goat out of that blowing snow. Impressive I don't know if I would ever be able to tackle that alone.

That sort of hunt takes a strong will, even with another hunter along for the journey. The fact you did it alone makes it even more impressive. Congrats on your trophy.

You got some serious s#*t happening with those toes. I applaud your courage and congratulate you on the success of your hunt. Nice sized goat, are they all dirty rascals like that up there?
Have you read any of Pat Ferguson' books, like "Gone Huntin'"? Pat liked to hunt goats when he lived in Stewart years ago, hence the book. He has another one out called "Gone Hunting Again".
I bring this up because you followed in his footsteps and you might like to compare notes with him. You can probably do that in person at the next KTSA Gun Show in Kamloops, he usually has a booth to sell his books. Pat is a very congenial person and a great storyteller.

Well that settles it. I most assuredly don't have what it takes for a goat hunt like that anymore. I have my tanned hide to prove I did it once but I don't believe I'll be getting to the top of those mountains again in this lifetime.

Thanks for posting the pictures. I'm experiencing those kind of hunts through the new generation of hard core mountain top hunters now.

Great season you had rubberfist they don't get much better than that. Four great mountain critters in the same season. Congrats on a very tough goat hunt. I know how your toes feel I loose between 4 and 6 nails each year. I am guessing you will loose yours as well they should fall off about April LOL thats when I loose mine. Thanks for all the great posts this year.
