My girlfriend got a draw for 5-2c this year, I grw up on a ranch in this zone, so we started our hunt around where i grew up, after seeing a bull the first day but unable to get close to him we were excited. After a few more days went by and we saw nothing but lots of bucks i decided to get some help from Mr. Rupp, he has some very good tips for us, the next morning we went out to an area and hiked in and watched a small swamp against a clear cut. As it was just starting to get light out a large bull appeared about 250 yards from us, it got a bit closer after waiting a bit but still over 200 yards. After watching him for a bit longer me and my girlfriend decided that she should take a shot at him as he was standing with his side right to us, so she fired, the bull fell and got right back up and ran. At that point i had a bad feeling that she had missed but was hopefull that he ran and fell again. After searching a kilometer area in the direction of travel for 3 hours we did not find any blood or sign of a moose. My girl friend was very upset about it but we couldnt do much. We left and came back to the spot in the evening and still could not find any signs of the bull and no birds flying around. The next day we came back to the spot and still no signs. So we decided to take a day off and start the next morning after that. So out we went before dark to a promising area with lots of water and food. We got to the spot and set out to wait above a lake with a small group of trees between the lake and a clear cut. Like it was meant to be as it started to get light out a nice bull comes walking out into the clear cut from the direction of the lake. I gave out a cow call and then a grunt a couple miniutes after which got him about 75 yards from us when my girl friend took the shot and down he went, a nice 5x4 bull with a funny drop tine. She was so happy to finally get one down. Thanks to HBC members for there tips.

That is awesome you must have did a great job on pre hunting got it right for her first season. I would work on her longer shots for next season but not worry about it you never get them all but a young bull like that is perfect freezer meat for this year.

Well the area where we saw a bull the first day and where the one bull got away was areas that we scouted. Ya i got to get her shooting at some longer distances and possibly a new scope for her gun. But over all we have a freezer full of moose that tastes great.

Good going
shot placement is the key, lots of non-vital area on a moose
