Well, my name is Joey, I am 14 and won a moose draw on my first put in.
Last week I had taken a week off of school, and my dad, and step-dad also took a week off of work.
We had 7 days to get the job done.
Can't really go into detail but i'll tell you we are starting to see much more than we did last year.
Last year we saw 35 Mule deer, and 1 buck.
Buck didn't die.
This year we saw 94 Mule deer, and 2 very large bucks.
No deer were harvested.
Anyways, with three days left on the hunt, we found out the trick to moose.
Cow call!
On my first ever time calling I called in two moose, cow calf.
Then I proceeded to call in 5 more moose, all cow calf except for the last one.
While parking the quad on a hill, we decided to break for lunch.
For giggles I said, let me blow the horn see if we can call it in again haha.
Nothing showed, so we went down the hill..
That's where the magic began.
Turned a cold corner and BAM.
Bull moose heading the direction of the area I called.
Off the quad, one round loaded.
BOOM!
The shoot was almost good.
All the scope showed was a two rump roasts and ears.
Put the bullet back of the head, but it only cut the back of the neck :(
No spray on anything behind it just a patch of hairs and a very poor blood-trail we tracked for about 1.5 miles
Trust me, there was no blood.
Unfortunately it was not a solid hit.
After trailing for 5 hours we decided there was no blood and we ended up out of the snow and into the clear cuts.
Blood-trail gone :(
The blood had also stopped about 300 feet from the clear cut with small millimeter droplets.
After the sick feeling of that moose getting away all the un-answered questions running through our minds we decided to give it awhile.
While driving back to check for more mule bucks we ran into 4 deer.
Two forks with atleast 25 inch rise and 10 inch spread.
I need peed myself biggest deer i've ever seen.
They were with 2 does aswell? rut starting early? it was minus 5 up there with snow !
Anyone know?
anyways we went back and looked for meat where the bullet hit and still just hair which satisfied us a bit, knowing it wasn't a solid hit and the bull will carry on.
By the way the bull was a 3x0 haha, a little freaked head but still a bull and a memory I will cherish.
Thanks for reading sorry for not a lot of detail but it was a fun hunt !
