The wife had a guide camp this weekend which left us boys home for the weekend by ourselves so we went out for the first hunt of the season. Friday we were out at our usual spot but there was hardly any sign and after thinking and searching google earth a bit I decided to try a new area.

Because I had my 4 year old with us I sat Ryan and Shaun down on an outcropping of rock and checked out the block we were on, saw loads of sign and decided to warm up in the truck and move it closer then hit the block around 2 and set up for dusk. We started walking in and glassing all around.

There was one area of the block where there was alot of sign and so I had stayed out of there figuring we could set up above and was I right. We found a nice rock to lay prone on over looking the block so I set up my 13 year old and took the 4 year old with me about 200 yards away. Just as we were setting up we hear 2 shots from Ryans position so I loaded up again and threw Shaun on my shoulders and booked it back. Get there and Ryan is walking up to us with a grin on his face telling me he had dropped a white tail doe which is what we were looking for. Before I had left him I spent 10 minutes having him tell me what to look for to identify a WT doe and man did he do a great job. At 65 meters out and 20 down he punched a hole right behind the leg and ripped the heart in two and as it was doing the death throws he shot it in the head because he thought it was suffering. Needless to say I am very proud that he took the time to watch it and make sure there wasnt a fawn with it and that it was a WT doe and then dumped with one shot.

What a great day with my two boys and the funny thing is the first time Ryan was out with me I shot a muley buck in about an hour and the first time Shaun is out Ryan shoots a WT doe. So you see he did it again and cancelled one of my deer tags before I have had the chance just like last year. I am pretty sure Shaun is hooked now to as he was telling his sister "you go out and see a deer then you shoot it and take it home, cut it up and eat it".

Yes he had a grenade strapped to his chest, his assault rifle, binos and a combat knife. Shaun was well supplied and man did he sleep after all the walking and excitement.

Yes I have been working on my daughter for a year and she is now 10 but only interested in maybe shooting ditch chickens which is a good starting point. Tonight as we were butchering it she forced herself to come out and hang with us boys and that was really cool for me, hopefully one day she will be out there with us.

Yes we feasted on tender loins tonight with scalloped potatoes and peas, it was very good and great for Ryan to supply food for the family. Last year I saw his deer and took him out the following day so he could get it but this year I told him he was on his own and if I saw it first I was going to shoot it nad he still beat me to the punch.

Way to go, love it. Glad to see your starting them off right and with the best rifle out there (Ruger tang safety). What caliber is the rifle.

Great Job! Ryan knows how to bring home the tenderloin. Shaun is learning by example and there is nothing greater than sibling example setting in a positive manner.
Job well done Gibblewabble.

Yes the meat is excellent, I made some venison stew when I was home last and my daughter didn't even realize it till I told her. Quite proud of both my boys, Ryan for getting his deer and Shaun for lasting the whole day at 4. Thanks for the comments guys.
