Primos wench, $10, you need to build a lot of skill and spend a lot of money to do better! The RNT duckhead's are pretty nice too, most major companies have calling "tapes", maybe even downloaded now (don't know), they really help, as does spending some time with someone who can use them..

Very best,

Ian

Generally most you will find in any stores around here will call better then most people using them.

Another option is to join Delta Waterfowl, with the membership you get a free call. Its nothing fancy, but I have managers to shoot a good pile of ducks using it.

Primos makes good calls that work well I use a pro mallard and their shake call for feeding chuckle and I seem to do alright and l'm no great master at calling. I have a partner that uses the wench and it seems to work for him. Reasonable price and a little practice produces pretty good results. Personally I would stay away from Knight and Hale but maybe thats just me.

I bought a cheap knight and hale duck call and it has helped me reach my bag limit for ducks this year. I watched some youtube duck hunting vids and just tried to sound like them, and it worked. Just get consistant with the sound pitches in what ever you buy and in cold weather keep the reeds from freezing so it doesn't squeal when you need it to sound good, otherwise you'll watch the ducks fly away before they get close enough for a shot :)

I have a pair of 1950s vintage Olts calls, 1 duck and 1 goose. They were my Da's and he taught me to call on them as a lad, they still turn birds to this day.

^amen buddy^, IMHO just buy any cheap mallard call and get out there, if they didnt work they wouldnt sell them, go down to a public park and listen to the sounds they make then go on youtube and watch the tens of thousands of videos on there. Then... go out into the field and see if you can get some attention, going out and seeing what needs to change and what works is probably the best way to learn and get accustomed to your area. just learn the basics, (greeter and feeder, if that fails buy a shaker)

best way to call...

take call in hand, drop call, while in mid air punt call, forget about finding call, quietly tell buddies to get ready, loudly announce your burning urge to take a whizz, hunker down and kill ducks,

works every time, in all seriousness the Faulks WA-33 at 12 bucks is hard to beat

how about a mallard whistle? I suck at calling but thinking blowing into a whistle might be idiot proof :)
