Gatco sharpening system, like Lansky but rods are attached to each stone. Have been using this for 20 yrs ( same kit) and love it. Knife is held in a clamp and stone is always at the right angle, makes a perfect edge every time. I also bought a fine diamond hone to add to the kit so touch ups are very fast.

Lansky diamond hone kit, coarse---to---extra fine. 5 hones all together and it makes for a razor sharp knife.

I use a 1000x Japenese water stone, it cuts quickly and clean-up is easy as you use only water, not oil, and it produces an edge you can shave with.

I use an edgepro. The knife is held in a fixed position and the stone is run over the edge at an angle of your choice. All my hunting knives now have a durable edge that can shave hair. A quick touch up after use seems to keep them that way... that and not using your gutting/skinning knife for anything other than gutting and skinning.

I've looked at the Lansky and the Gatco, different twist on the same concept that seems to work fine as well. The Lansky is probably a better value than the Edgepro for the basics.

takes a little skill but "Speedy Sharp" is my current favorite.

Gatco or wet stone. And then strop. I don't settle till I can shave. If you ever meet me that's why my left arm is bald.

My Son just bought me a Lansky Sharpener Kit. Son of a Gun, once you watch the Video, 10 or 15 times, it work's great! I've always used the one that you just pull the Knife through, worked good, but not even close to the Lansky Sharpener! I seen on there Web Site they have a Sharpener you can keep in your pack, it's the V'd shape one with a handle and you just draw your knife through it a few times well cleaning your animal. I still keep a Olpa with extra blades, the larger one, works great when you have to cut through the hide and hair etc.

Hi
I use a water stone ( 300 and 1000 grit) and then a Dickoron steel. Most important thing is the angle.

Stone and steel and lots of practice is my stand by, always steel my blades before they are dull so the stone doesnt come out often.

I use a 2 sided course/fine whet stone set in a hard wood box with a fitted top. I remember Gramps teaching me to sharpen knives on it when l was 7 or 8 he passed it down to me. Water no oil and he prefered spit for what ever reason. The tredition still lives.

I use recently bought the gates sharpening tool and have found it to do a really good job of getting a keen edge on my knives. I also use ceramic sticks for bringing the edge back to razor sharpness when in the field. Previous to the gates system I always used an india stone and hand sharpened my blades.

A sharp knife brings a smile to my face when it is cutting as desired.
