looking for some ideas for a shoulder mount for my stone sheep I took last Sunday. It is a late season cape so it will be a fairly decent size shoulder mount, wondering if you could post me some pics of some stone or dall sheep mounts for ideas to see whats out there just for curiosity. I googled lots just wanted to see what was out there in huntingbc.http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/311750_2310282388801_1001583217_32693448_160496166 0_n.jpg

Thanks Curly top, bighorn hunter and sitkaspruce ! The story really all starts back to August of this year when a buddy and I went on a backpack stone sheep hunt, being fairly green at sheep hunting to boot. My partner managed to pull one hell of a ram opening day being 36x 36" and broomed hard with 15" bases ! Buddy got his sheep green scored at 169 3/8 lots of mass through out! theres a pic of the ram on the 2011 stone sheep pic forum. But long story short I was hooked on sheep hunting after that ! Went on another sheep / goat hunt early September that was a good learning experience. Seen lots of sheep just nothing legal but before you know it, are time was up and it was time to head home as me and my partner had to be at that one nasty thing that prevents us from hunting "work" ! When I was at home all I could think about was going up north for one more crack at a stone sheep as it would be my 3rd sheep hunt of the year. Talking to a another buddy I work with he asked me if I wanted to head up north come days off and I was in ! I had a area in mind when we got up north that I wanted to try, as we were hunting out of are packs ! cold as hell at nights but if you want to be a successful sheep hunter your gonna have to face the elements as we all know. We didnt see to much the first 3 days goats, ews and bananna rams. By qawincadence I ran into a few buddys from back home that are seasoned sheep hunters that have taken good rams in the past and were looking for a larger ram then previous years and knew where this one ram was that they werent sure If they wanted and asked me if I wanted to tag along, with out a doubt i said yes ! talk about a hook up ! It was a 2 hr hike to get on top off the mountain where they had last seen the ram. When we reached the top the rams were no where to be seen, feeling kinda bumbed out where they were, we thought we would walk a little higher up to see the back side of the drainage. The drainage was very steep ! and high finally my one buddy said get the hell up here to me and the other guy so we quikly got up to the ridge of the mountain and there he was ! they looked at him and decided he wasnt better then there rams from previous years giving me the green light as it would be a great first ram ! missing the first shot the ram ran about 20 yrds up the mountain then i made a good solid 2nd shot getting him in the boiler room causing him to take a nasty fall where he layed to rest ! I was super excited i had finally got my first sheep thanks to some buddys that helped me out big time ! Had a good photo session, caped also deboned the sheep and boy it felt good to have all that weight on the packs being that I had got my sheep with a smile the size of texas on my face ! hard work and persistence really payed of this year ! The ram is a 9 yr old 34 "x35 " with 13.5" bases.

Ozzy, just a note;

You might wanna check out the HBC, auctions and sales forum. IIRC, there's a sponsor auctioning off a shoulder mount for the critter of your choice; The proceeds go to keeping this site 'alive'.

Congrats on the ram.

My advice to you is , make sure the ram is not looking down. In my opinion you want to be looking at it kind of like you took that picture. The higher the chin the better they look. Just my opinion . I have 5 on the wall and all the ones that look down do not look as good. Beuty ram . Sure is fat.

Ozzy thats an awesome story bro such a thick looking sheep love that cape !!! I think its just great to hear about guys getting the hunt in your blood and nothing like a challenging mountain hunt that will just keep you going back.

Keep up the good work !

This one is my favorite posture posted in the thread so far. Why? I think it's the downward position of the head. Makes me think the Ram is confidently looking down at the breathless hunters below....

I found this mount on google, awesome cape ! and it is a late season. I would do mine turning the other way since his dominate side is on the left. Its simple but yet it does the trick.

One of the considering, important factors in choosing a form, is where it will be displayed in your home, office, etc.

Is it going to be up high, in a corner,,,,, and how will it be viewed?
I try to have my stuff engage a person as they walk into the room it's hung in.

As is the case when viewing rams in the flesh, a ram viewed from below always looks bigger. This is why I think a ram with it's head turned down gives an uflattering view of the horns. That one late season posted earlier in this thread that is looking down and to the right looks pretty sweet, but man does it make the horns look SMALL (smaller even than they are).

This is my Oct 2010 stone I went with a sneak mount with a head tilt. It was done by T & C taxidermy in FSJ I was am very happy with how it turned out. The other rams in the picture are standard mounts left and right turns with early August capes.

All my stone sheep hunting is done in late season, way less pressure and when you are going in on foot, you don't need to get as far back. I have done the August thing as well and ended up way back up a drainage but didn't have near as good luck.
The top left one was part of a double header with a buddy of mine after he picked out his first sheep, he is a smaller tighter curl than I wanted and broomed off heavy on his left side but I figured I would remove him from the gene pool and let the larger ones have at it, as well as it made for some cool pictures with two rams down within 50 feet of each other.

Nope. I definately agree with you Mr. Dean!
The first pic with the three grinning hunters has a completely different ram than the wall mount claimed to be the same one!!!
The first one was a bit of a red head, while the second one has more greys and rich brown colors.

Is this the same ram as in your avatar? Did the taxi oil the horns or something? To me they look darker now.

Great ram BTW

It is the same ram, thanks. I think the horns were oiled even though I didn't ask for it to be done. Is this common practice with sheep mounts?

I think it's something they should ask before they do it. I prefer them to look like they did when I pulled the pin. Either way it's a great lookin old ram.
