My brother and I headed up, way up to where my buddy has his camp set up for muley's and baby moose. We were hoping to spot some nice areas for elk on the way up for the next mornings hunt.
I stop at a pull out to water a bush. I glance up to my left and spot a nice 5x5, so we decide that it will be a good spot to start in the morning. I hope we are somewhat close to camp by now, and luckily I drive another hundred feet, pull into camp, and look up to see that same bull just above us.
I wake up in the morning a little groggy, must be something in the water? Everything is wet, and it is raining, but we might as well get up there. About 50 yards from camp I fall completely into the river along with my gun. This is going to be so fun!
We hike up for about 2 hours and finally start seeing some fresh elk sign. Do a little calling but nothing is answering. Continue climbing and we start seeing some nice muley rubs, so my brother says "Screw the elk! We are gonna spot ourselves a nice muley, but I will still shoot an elk if we run into one." About 50 steps later he turns and stops me, saying there is something walking towards us. I can hear it about 30 yards away, but it's greasy thick. I finally spot a head, it's a bull elk with all his bottom gear. I tell my bro to get ready. A few seconds later and I get a glimpse of his top ends, 4-5-6, he's all there!
"He's a six! Shoot him! He's a six! Shoot!" I whisper as loud as I can.
Not sure if he hears me, I say it again, "Shoot him, he's a six!"
My brother turns to me, "I can't ****ing see him!"
I really wanted my brother to get a shot at this bull, but I was starting to wonder if I should shoot him before he gets too close and spooks. I see a little opening that I think will provide my brother a shot. If he can't get that shot I will have to put him down. The bull walks towards that opening, I turn off my safety....BOOOOOM! The bull comes rolling down head over heals right towards us, with my brother having to jump out of the way. The bull lands in a bush, and I turn my safety back on, glad that I didn't have to take a shot.

It took him 12 years, but I think this little guy will make up for it. 20 yard neck shot; 6 hour pack, drag/roll down from the alpine, over deadfalls, through an old cut block and across a river. Need to thank my buddy Newton who we finally got a hold of on the radio to help pack this out, or we would have been out well after dark.
