I can't believe it, I wont believe it until I climb into the truck tomorrow and hit the road. Am I honestly and truly getting to finally go away, do I get to go hunting? C'MON, LET ME HEAR YA SO "OH YEAH, SISTER".

After 3 trips in the summer had to be cancelled due to unforseen circumstances, Peter and I finally get to head up to the cabin. We usually have been there at least 4 times before the Thanksgiving long weekend but this year has been very turmultuous, We have decided that this coming weekend we will celebrate our Thanksgiving with Breanne and Azshia and Clayton, in the cabin. We are leaving tomorrow after work, the kids will stay till Sunday and Peter and I will stay another week after. 10 days of beautiful fall weather and colours.

Breanne's boyfriend, Clayton has never gone fishing in a boat, he has banked fished and didn't see the thrill but he will this weekend. We are also going to introduce him to shooting. He seems very excited about learning about the things we enjoy, we'll see if he is man enough for what we have instore for him.

Azshia purchased her hunting license and tags so I am guessing she wants to do a little hunting with Mom and Dad. At this point, it doesn't even matter if I harvest any critters, I am just so looking forward to getting away. The rest will be a huge bonus.

So leaving reality for a bit and heading to heaven..............................

buh, bye

okay I think I am ready to type my little story...................

If y'all recall my family had a very tumultous summer and our family vacation to the cabin was cancelled. We weren't sure if we would ever be able to get away. But we finally did. With Braydon settled into Grande Prairie for his new hockey season, and the girls busy with work, Peter and I though a nice 10 days away would be great therapy.

Azshia and Breanne and her boyfriend Clayton drove up seperately and we began the treck to the cariboo. We saw quite a few deer on the drive (does) so we had a good feeling that it was gonna be a successful time hunting. After arriving at the cabin (1 am), we got the generator running and unloaded the vehicles, made the beds and cracked open the "we are finally here" cocktails (mine was a gingerale). Got the wood stove a blazing, settled the dogs in (this would be our Picky's first trip to the cabin). Azshia and I had to leave in the morning for town, as neither of us had our hunting licenses (everyone was sold out of the booklets or the tags in Langley). Peter was left to entertain Breanne and Clay.

Azshia and I only had to go as far a Forest Grove (thank goodness), the General Store there sold licenses. Back to the cabin we go, seeing a few more deer on the main FSR. (again all does)

So day 1 got off to a slow start.

Day 2, the hunters were off to explore and hope to find the bucks. After checking out the usual FSR's and areas we go and seeing nothing, not even a grouse, a sense of "this isnt gonna be good" came over me. Feeling disillusioned, we head back to the cabin but oh oh oh wait.........a grouse......"okay, Azshia go" she grabs my little savage, gets out of the truck......slams the truck door and flutter flutter off flies the grouse. Peter and I both burst out laughing, Azshia is looking perplexed, I point to the door and she shakes her head, "Oh My Gosh, I can't believe I slammed it closed." We have our little giggle and, she says, "well I may as well tinkle, seeing we're stopped," so she climbs back out of the truck and what do you think she does again..............................Yup BOOM slams the door. More laughter. back to the cabin we go. We did manage to get 2 grouse on the way back.

Day 3 was our day we planned to celebrate Thankgsgiving (because we missed having Thanksgiving the week before). Peter deceided this would be a great day to take the girls and Clay fishing. Clay has never fished before so it was exciting to introduce him to lake fishing as well as being outdoors. I stayed back at the cabin to prepare out traditional turkey and all the fixings. Cooking a big dinner like that is an all day process because you have to keep the wood stove burning at the right temperature. Fishing was quickly short lived, something wasn't running right on our little motor so Peter had to take it apart. Clay learned to fish from shore, guess we owe him a boat fishing trip (sturgeon on the jet boat in the fraser coming up). After getting the boat in a slow running copacity, the lake was a little on the rough side to fish. Peter and Azshia went for a small hunt for grouse (1 more). Coming back in time to clean up and begin the feast of Thanksgiving dinner.

Day 4, time for the kids to leave.

..................................to be continued

Peter and I decide to drive with the girls towards Forest grove as we have to go to the landfill and dispose of garbage and then to the store to replenish a few groceries and what do I see.............a sweet succulent 2 point buck still in velvet &^%%$* &&^%$* can't take him because we are in a residential zone grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr how typical so back to the cabin we go, along the way we take a few detours. We checked out how our little bit of property is fairing. Not much going on in that neck of the woods on Canim so we mosey on to another new road we discovered and take a good look around glassing the mountainside and the newley logged slashes. Nothing (getting a tad frustrated)

Day 5 we decide to take a day off from hunting and just clean out the cabin. We have had things stored in it since the kids were still very small so instead of hunting critters we hunted junk in the back room. The things we found and the laughter we had pulling certain items out and just remembering when the kids were smaller. Was a very heartwarming day as well as felt good to clean up junk. That evening we are heading to bed early so we can get up eary and hit the road for hunting. Wouldnt ya know after the dogs go home, the mice decide it's safe to come into the cabin. We know the mice get in so we have containers to put our food and such into to keep the mice out but once in a while they find a crumb here and there. So the war begins....................... mouse traps are set in strategic places

Day 6 wake up and yes we have mouse #1 in trap (good night and bye bye). Off we go hoping to locate a nice buck or a very full and ready to hybernate black bear. We take a quick ride down our known roads and see they are definitely not going to produce any critters for us so we explore. I made a suggestions where I would like to go, very shockingly Peter says sure why not, it's not like he was getting us into anything. So we head off down a new FSR. Following the new logging slashes and glasses at each visible and promising spot, Peter quickly sets his binos onto the rump end of a huge deer. Still too far to get a good look if it's a buck or doe, we follow the road a tad bit more to ease in a little closer. Peter decides to hike in and try and get a better look. Dang thing has disappeared. But we decide to stay put and wait it out. It's a beautiful sunshining day and the evening will be bring them out into the clearing, we hope. Is it me, or does anyone else do this, I get very groggy and sleepy when just sitting in the fresh air eventually nodding off? We glassed and we glassed and we waited and Peter called but to no avail darkness was setting upon us so back to the truck we go and head back to the cabin, tomorrow is another day.

Hey what the.................................. Hurry up woman!!!

I sure hope the cook book isn't like her story telling....................:-)

geeze, I'm sorry for the delay but I get side tracked once in a while........................................heheh ehehehehe

.........................
back at the cabin Peter relaxes by the fire and has a few long awaited and well deserving cocktails while I make supper where we eventually discuss our plans for the next day, somethings gotta give here, we know there are critters because we see every other Tom, Dick and Harry heading out of camps with harvested animals. We decide tomorrow is quad day. Not something I relish doing sitting on a quad being jostled and bounced around but "no pain no gain" if Iwant my buck. Peter had fabricated a nice little set up for me to ride behind him on our quad. He installed a cushy set with a back rest and stirrups so my legs don't just dangle.(being vertucally challenged has its diffuculties). I get things organized for the morning, Peter resets the mouse traps and we go to bed...........................grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr for the next few hours we hear scratching and pitter patter of itty bitty feet and then "SNAP" .........hear "crunch crunch crunch" and "SNAP" wohooooooooo mouse #2 and #3 bye bye

Day 7 good morning, loading up the rifles to the quad, climbing on and off we go..............I'm feeling very comfortable but one thing we didnt take into consideration was how hard it is gonna be for me to get off the dang thing if we spotted a buck, with Peter sitting in front of me and my feet hooked up into stirrups and my short legs trying to get off without falling on my behind............(don't y'all laugh, I know you are getting the visual)......the FSR that our cabin is on is 10km to the main FSR and the main FSR has some really great new side FSR's as well as the old roads which are much easier to get through on a quad than in the big Dodge Ram so I know today we are gonna put some km's in. We find a great place to head into that looks promising. We find a nice spot to stop and Peter does some exploring while I sit strapped into the quad. Hehehehehe make him do the walking. Still no sign of deer. So frustrating but hey that's hunting, right? We head down another "Y" in the road and wohoooo a grouse, Peter head shots it with my savage and we can say we have not been skunked (heheheheh funny , speaking of skunk, we did see a skunk sauntering across the road, little bugger saw us staring at him/her and turned lifting it's tail in a salute hello) sorry side tracked as usual. Not too far after getting the first grouse, Peter gets us another one. Then nothing again..........sun is now quickly leaving us and daylight ending and no buck to be had, we start the track back to the cabin once again. I see another grouse as it flies into a tree and the light is at that time when its not dark but its not daylight yet still in the hours of hunting......Peter tells me to take this grouse..so I climb off the quad, not very delicately or quiet, thinking that sucker is gonna be gone before I get set up but I keep my eye on it, raise my little savage and "BAM" tumbling grouse and my retriever heading to go get it for me (hehehehe Peter). Riding back 70 km to the cabin, I was feeling very sad that there was no buck strapped to the quad but hey not returning completely empty.

Back at the cabin, we make the decision to leave a couple days early as we just aren't seeing the signs we were hoping. Now had we drawn and moose LEH, ya the tags would have been cut, cause we know where they are and saw signs of plenty but the deer, they were hiding really well.

I had had enough of the mice each night being holy terrors, Peter worked on the outside of the cabin, covering up areas we suspected they were gettin in while I fabricated the mother of all mousetraps (a 5 gallon bucket with water in the bottom, a broom handle, a water bottle, peanut butter, and a ramp - cut a hole in the bottom of bottle to slide onto broom handle-smear peanut butter onto bottle- hammer 2 nails on each side of bucket rim and balance broom handle inbetween nails and be sure bottle spins- mice walk up ramp to get to peanutt butter-bottle rolls and mice fall in bucket...bye bye mouse)..........
Mouse #4 and #5 gone

Day 8 time to go home. So in total: Glinnums - 6 grouse - 1 fish - 5 mice - 0 deer.......................saw 2 bucks - many does - 1 skunk - 1 goat

The goat is a funny story, I'll have to tell ya about ............................................just not today hehehehheheh

pictures coming.................
