I went back home to 100 mile for a week for my leh moose. My draw was for 5-2A where i've hunted my whole life so I was looking forward to getting out and checking all my dad's old moose spots. Me and my one buddy spent a couple days in one area looking for a moose while my dad took my other friend out to try to get a buck. Turns out my dad was the one that ended up getting a nice 4 point.
They were out in an area that my dad has seen a couple average sized bucks around so he thought it would be a great opportunity to find my friend a buck. First day they went out all they ended up seeing was a cow moose, the second day they were out for a couple hours and went by one spot a couple times on the way to get a load of wood. On the way back my friend spotted a nice buck so out they went and before my friend had the gun up...BOOM. Another second and the buck would have been out of sight so he didn't want to miss the opportunity at a nice buck. My friend was excited to be apart of it.

Meanwhile during the first 3 days of my moose hunt we didn't see a single moose. Saw lots of deer including a couple little bucks and chased a few grouse around. So after doing lots of calling, walking, driving in one area, the next day I decided to get my dad to take me to a different spot that he knew about years ago.
My one friend had to go home so it was me, my dad, and my other friend (who was with my dad when he shot the buck). We parked the truck and started walking in when we saw this guy...

He trotted around and started to snort while crashing through the bush. I figured great now everything in the area will be gone. Seemed like we saw horse sign everywhere we went.

We continued on and got into the meadow where there was a big tree in the middle that used to have an old tree stand in it.

There wasn't much left of the treestand, just big branches to stand on and an old stick tied across in one direction for a gun rest. That was good enough for me so i climbed up and got comfortable.

As soon as I got up in the tree and got ready, my dad let out a call into the wind in one direction and then a minute later gave another call in the other direction as the wind died down a bit.
"Over there" my dad called up to me. Then I heard a grunt too and it was close. I got turned around facing where it was coming from.
Here's what i had to look through:

The bull was letting out one grunt after the other and coming in fast. You could hear him crashing the whole way. As i was looking along the timber line for him to come out all of a sudden I spotted him already 100 yrds into the meadow! He was on the run strait into where we were. I waited for him to stop, about 80 yrds from us, and let the shot go. He continued run closer to us, turned and then piled up within a couple seconds! Holy crap what a rush! That was the first time I've ever seen a bull get called in and it all happened so fast! My dad and friend were on the ground and said that all they saw was the tips of his antlers above the willows after I shot.
This was only the second bull that I have ever shot and for a small bull what a huge animal!

We got him cleaned out and went back home to get my dads truck with the quad and was an easy drag out since the trail had been slashed out years ago for a quad. He sure filled up the back of my truck too!

Nice work. Great looking spot you were in to get the moose. What is the antler across your seat for? Raking the bush or was it a drop you found?

We found the shed on the way out, it was a bigger shed than my bull.

Great story and pics, Brian. Congrats to you and your dad on a very successful hunt. I miss the old stomping grounds around 100 Mile. It would be nice to get that moose draw one of these years.
