View Full Version : Brambles & Rattler Elk Extravaganza

After working all winter, spring, summer and first 2 weeks of September building my house and getting it ready to move in, I was able to put the house aside and go hunting.

Rattler and I planned an alpine mulie hunt, and after not seeing any shooter bucks we switched gears and went Elk hunting. What a disaster, everyone and there dogs were hunting, elk were quiet and the weather wasn`t cooperating.

We decided if everyone else had come here to hunt that means there is probably reduced pressure towards the east. So we get up early and head to where the timber is easier to hunt and you can actually see an elk further than 30 yards for a shot.

We drive to an area we hunted a couple years ago for deer and had seen some good elk sign. There was a stretch of timber we wanted to hunt our way through.

As we quietly drive into the area we stop and start getting our gear ready, I put on my bino`s and decide to go look over the edge, the grass was tall, I reach a spot where can see through the grass and brush. Put up my browning bino`s, my 10x Zeiss bino`s went out for repair and left me with my 8 power backup bino`s. Glassing the timber I was noting to myself how much I prefer the 10x.

I put my bino`s down and with my naked eye I see to my left an elk standing there looking at me. Up with the 8x and I could tell its a bull but no way of counting points.

I drop down and look at rattler behind me, RATTLER, .....ELK..........I NEED A SPOTTING SCOPE NOW.
He see`s I AIN`T kidding, and puts it into high gear.

As Rattler gets to me, I have already cleared a shooting lane for a seated shooting position and ranged him at 208 yards.

My rifle scope is a 10x and I think I can see a 6th point, so I get ready for Rattlers verification. The elk starts getting antsy, and starts moving slowly towards thicker cover. Rattler has to wait till the elk turns his head to see the 6th, when he does Rattler say`s he`s a SIX. I squeeze the trigger.........friggen safety is on. F$%K. Snap the safety off, Rattler cow calls. The bull stops but`s facing us, BANG. He starts running, I reload and inches before he hits cover I lead him a little and let another fly. Rattler says, you dropped him..... Wholy crap.. can you believe that.

THEN the unthinkable happens. We look where the Bull was originally standing and ANOTHER bull steps out. I grab the spotting scope as rattler sets up. I say, he`s a 5 on one side, ...........he starts walking away.........but he`s a 6 on the other side, kill em.

The bull is now ass towards us but looking back at us, Rattler places it on his neck and BANG, and the unmistakeble SMACK and the bull drops in his tracks.

By the time the shooting was done it was 7am:mrgreen:.
Even better, there was an access road right below them, first bull was 15 feet from it and the other was 30 feet.

By 9am, pictures were taken and both bulls were gutted and loaded Whole in the back of the truck, took another hour to figure out how to get the quad in the truck with them.

We didn`t see another hunter in the whole area. Gotta love it.

Pictures to follow

Cool story, look forward to the photos! Gotta love it when it works out like that, had a similar incidence like that myself...2 6-pointers down within a couple minutes...but on a back pack hunt...:(

You guys sure seem to have those elk figured out down there! I guess the easy pack this year is making up for the expeditions you've had in past years :-D

I hope you have a picture of the truck loaded up...quad, 2 elk (whole!!) and all...lol!!

Never been in that situation myself but I always wonder what people do going out for moose with a reg box with quad in it already!! I know some guys will stash the quad and come back for it later but I guess that depends on how far from home you are!

To protect the elk, we found two 66`logs and strapped them together and placed them over the wheel wells, spread the load out over a bigger area, and if it compressed the ribcages enough it would hit the wheelwells. Worked like a charm, no broken ribs and the quad didn`t move an inch.

anytime u two dont encounter a GRIZZ,it must be considered great success
but add two bulls to the mix and it's a greater success.

Another example of being prepared ( not looking for ammo in a pack sack), Spotter ready and cooperating in a joint effort, and good shooting by both partners all add up to being able to capitalize on the situation. Some call it luck, I don't think so. How many guys have gotten out of a truck, slammed doors, called to their partner to hurry up, then watched the long saught after game disappear in a flash??? Congrats you two !

Rattlers wife said that exact same thing that morning, "Oh you guys are going hunting together??? Your gonna kill something!!"

Its a great thing when two hunting partners just click and between the two of you, good things just seem to happen.......Well minus the pesky grizz thing, but mostly good...lol

Yeah, sure feels nice going into Mulie season with full freezers. Pressures off, now its time to play.
I'm gonna take a few days and commit to getting one of my real unlucky buddies out to kill his first deer, he's been dabbling on and off for about 25 years and still hasn't put hair on the ground. He's got a real bad black cloud that follows him around.
