Have to say I just got back from the best hunt I've ever had. 7 days hunting with my 10 year old son and my dad. 3 generations hunting together. This was my son's first major trip and he was my main focus all week. He had a blast. The true essense of the hunt was brought home. It ain't about score. It's truely about the hunt. Sleeping in the walltent, cooking meals over a fire, the kids shooting cans with the .22, being in some of the best scenery the world has to offer, seeing the excitement in a boy's eyes when he kills his first grouse, sharing the fire with family and friends. Man that is what it is all about. We saw plenty of wildlife like whiteys, muleys, mountain goats, black bears, lynx and even managed to see a grizz. I left him up on the mountain for a future upcoming solo trip.

My opening day whitey (5X4) taken on Sept 10th. It was a father and son team effort. Cody spotted it and I was able to put him on the ground. He's going to be some great vension. Cooked up his tenderloins over the fire and man was it ever good.

My dad's 6x4 dropper meatbuck taken the second morning of hunt. Dad has a serious heart condition and can't hunt like he used to so it sure was awesome to see him hammer this buck. This too, will be some great vension. The buck was plum full of blueberries.

Dana, it's never about the "score" - at least for me. It's all about enjoying the outing, everything you mentioned right down to doing dishes with your camp mates after a great meal.

Hey Steve,
Right on. You, your son and your father will never forget these hunting memories. I still remember going with my Dad and Grandfather just as you and many others did at a young age. I'm sure your son will be a hard core mulie nut 4life just like his Dad!

Goat,
This summer we had some shooting issues (he got scoped and ended up with 4 stitches). Not what I wanted him to experience this early in the ballgame. He tried my other Savage with the iron sights but it kicks to hard for him. So we decided to wait until he's a little bigger to hunt deer. He definately is keen to hunt chickens with the 22 though. Got him into a lot of action yesterday. He got 3. :) He'll be hunting deer in no time. I don't need to rush it.

What'd ya do Steve? Hand him your 300mag:eek:  ??

Congrats on a great trip:cool: ! I've got a couple of years to go to get the kids shooting. I finally do have a trip planned with my Dad (now 71). We've hardly ever hunted together so I hope this will be one year filled with memories like yours.

LOL! No, it was the ol' 300 Sav. He doesn't quite fit it yet. Was a father's nightmare. Thought I had him positioned right but it bucked him pretty hard and the scope caught him on the forehead. Lucky for a small town hospital, as I could just imagine trying to explain to a city Dr as to how that can happen. Cody's a tough kid though and took the stitches really well. With another year of growing we'll giver another go at it next year. The chickens and huntin with his ol' man are keeping him quite happy. :)

Thanks for the reminder on priorities in life! Reading your post and seeing the happy faces in those pics made me realise that I haven't been spending enough time with my boys lately. I just got off the phone with my father-in-law planning a weekend trip for him, my boys and I!

Meat for the freezer is nice, and a good rack is icing on the cake, but the time spent together and the memories they will keep for life is the real trophy. Congaratulations on your game, and my gratitude for the 'Life Lesson'. Think TLC would make a little statue for this?

Hey Matt,
Send me a email with your number and I'll give ya a call. We need to hook up and maybe you can back me up on a grizz in an upcoming weekend if it fits into your hard life of a college student. ;)

Good deal, nice to hear you're getting out with your son!! That's awesome.

My second rifle a 30-06 had a huge butt pad put on it - we got it off of a guy who was all of 5 feet so he didn't handle the kick well. I wasn't any taller when I was 10. Something like that might help your son out in the future??
