View Full Version : My little river bull...

I've been on a quest to kill an elk around the Prince George area for several years now, and by 'around Prince George' I mean within a couple hours drive of town. Had some good hunting and close calls over the years, but hadn't been able to connect. This year, being out of school for the fall semester, I've had some time to get out after some bulls. Seemed like the bulls were really active the last week or so, I knew it was a matter of time before I'd get a crack at a 6-pont.
I woke up early the other morning and drove a couple hours out of town to a decent elk spot. I started hiking in darkness, and as daylight started to appear I could hear one or two bulls bugling in the distance. I worked my way closer to the last known bugles and did some cow calling. I finally pinpointed the bull across the river from me. I worked down to the river bank and kept cow calling, the bull was screaming. Finally I saw him walk out on to the gravel bar, it was a neat scene with the fog and the sun coming up and him bugling right out in the open. I thought the bull was a 5pt at first, then I saw he had a 6th point on one side that was very marginal. Then finally I saw the other side was an obvious 6pt. He wasn't a big bull, but I couldn't turn it down...the freezer is pretty bare! He walked broadside across from me on the other side of the river at 60 yards. I whistled to stop him, and he let out a bugle that I rudely interrupted. My shot was high into the spine and he dropped. He started pulling himself into the river. I got another bullet in him but not before he got part way submerged. 8 1/2 hours later I had him all packed up and in the back of the truck, ready to go home.
Here he is. Not much of a bull, but the quest was finally over:

Nice bull, that should put some meat on your table this year. In the event you get a deer during the rut, I wondering what's going to be left in your freezer between sheep, elk and deer before 2012 season start.:-D
Keep it up man

Damn right it was. Crossing the river in my boxers was a good way to wake up in the morning. I went into a waist deep hole at one point and wasn't even sure of my gender for a few minutes once I got to the other side...

Congrats!
Looks like they taught you how to work the camera up North. Sitting up in the nose bleeds and losing those baby cheeks makes that bull look real nice..................
hahaha
Should be tasty.
