I am new to hunting and BC so am pretty much in the same boat. I started out with The Outdoor Recreation Guide Backroad Mapbook, Google Maps, hunting regs (no shooting areas), HBC, and the BC Parks website to determine which parks might allow hunting (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/index.html). The google satellite and topos are very useful but it really helps to put boots on the ground to give the maps and sat images context (what does a rock slide or an old cutblock look like in the sat view) - start a notebook and make notes for every trip. If you learn something than a trip that was a bust for game was not a total waste. The Canadian government also has a lot of excellent topo maps with dates for when logging activity etc occurred. These are the maps you want and can conveniently be downloaded for free. I think the map you want is 92-G/11 (http://publications.gc.ca/site/eng/339119/publication.html). The resolution is much higher than the guidebooks.
