:) Headed out tp Fernie two days before Bow opening for ELK .Due to the inabilaty to climb due to medical problems I made my way in on level ground for15 min and set up a ground blind on a well travelled trail in a small valley.
:) Opening morning I called in a 6pt (A little on the smallish side) that slide down the hillside and walked quickly across my front at 20 yds and was basicly wide open. He was focused on the other side of the small valley looking for the cows he had heard and when seeing none he reversed his field back across my front and circled to my right at 25yds where he winded me and took off . The whole time I had my Recurve 3/4 drawn and although confident in taking a moving shot , Felt he would stop and present me with a perfect shot.
 His bearing and beautifull bright tan color still stand out in my mind and right then the trip was worth while .

It takes a cool head under pressure and alot of self dicipline to do what you did. Having said that, I have learned more about the animals vocalizations and mannerisms having not taken the shot.

Greybark, I applaud you for holding your fire. Respect for the animal is what it's all about. The experience of having that elk so close will last a lifetime.

I'm with everybody here greybark...well done! On another note, could you not have stopped him with a quiet little "grunt" like a deer?

I'm somewhat like you, in that my climbing abilities are very limited. Good to hear (and read) that you were able to have an opportunity while not having to climb up thousands of feet.

:) Hey BowWalker . You are right in that a little chirp or grunt would have stopped him in his tracks , However he would have been alert and looking at me from 20 yds . I have found that on previous and similar situations you don`t have time to finish your draw , pick a spot and release your arrow before they just vanish .
:) Hopefully he will survive to pass on his genes , Most of the ELK i have called in real close are coated with mud from their wallows but this one was bright and clean (on his first date) .
