Nice looking caribou, they sure are beautiful animals. How did the meat end up tasting? Should still have been early enough in the season.

He's a region 6 bull.

The meat was perfect. While packing him out I saw a group of 4 bulls hot on the trail of a couple of cows. The bulls were starting to spar a little bit, so I think the rut was starting to ramp up. If I had waited one more week I think I would have been taking a big risk as far as quality of meat goes.

Sounds good, some of the best meat I ever had was from my late August bull, can't tell you how good it was. Need to do that again soon.

I was thinking about getting a shoulder mount but I was running out of time out there and I wanted to make sure I took care of the meat first. End result is that I'm just going with a euro mount.

nice caribou, and double shovels too!!
did you keep the hide? it always seemed such a shame to leave such a nice hide behind, I'm tanning the hide of the one I got on Sept.12th.

Nice bull, score 1 for perseverance! How much do you think the meat weighs on a caribou that size?

Nope, I felt rushed being way back in the bush all by myself. I was working on getting the cape off for a shoulder mount, but it was taking too long so I decided to just got with a euro mount, which is what I had planned pre-hunt.

That's a tough question to answer, some of the other more experienced hunters can probably give you a better idea, but I'd say there was maybe around 150ish pounds de-boned.

There are two types of caribou meat, good and bad. Nice to know there are still people out there that are after good eating meat. Its a beautiful looking bull. Be proud of what you have done.

If the hunting lifestyle is to survive it has to be about the meat.
