Not mine, it was taken by the NA Natives (Slavey) camped across the lake from us.

They also had nets out catching fish for drying. Here are some pics of their camp.

These were left in the nets for over a day, so they said they were no good anymore, left them on the beach for the guls to take care of

Was pretty interesting, as the elders took my kids in and showed them lots of neet stuff. Kids really liked trying to call another Moose by scraping an old shoulder blade on the willows. Dry Meat was something new too, as well as the drying Pike. Scraping the Moose Hide looks like a ton of work for an 84yr old woman.

Nice moose! I'd get a euro mount on that one.

That knife the old fellow is holding looks to be a Hudson Bay trading knife!! I have one that was given to me by an old timer. Those knifes were originally traded with FN over a hundred years ago. Very cool photos thanks!!

It was really quite an "eye opener" visiting that camp. Most everything was "improvised", and you just wouldn't imagine some of the things they have done, and do to make life easier. Very interesting and I got many ideas on how to make my life easier in the bush.
As for the knife, well that's something I didn't know. Tks for pointing it out.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.
It looks like fall is setting in good there.

Howdy, great pictures-haven't seen anything like this since I left the Yukon. No part of a moose goes to waste in one of their hunting camps. Thanks for sharing. Later

Great pics that sure tell a story. I agree - it would be a fantastic experience to be part of that camp just to pick up on the knowledge. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Looking at the pictures again more carefully, it is obvious that they are trying to have nothing go to waste. Even the moose face is cut clear. What did they do with it out of curiosity? I leave the head out in the bush and come back a few months later to pick up the skull. Did they use the brains to help tan the hide?

Cheers,
BB

Can't say for sure, but it looked to me like they were using everything. The nose tongue and cheeks are considered a delicacy.
Man, they even kept and dried the Pike ribs and backbones

For the FN to receive a Hudson Bay trading knife they had to stack beaver pelts as high as the knife from end to end. The knifes are very thin steel, keep in mind they are most likely 100-120 plus years old but
the HB trading company wasn't splurging on a top dollar knife, they were here to make money.

Got a pic of your knife?
