I think that one is the one, but I don't know if it would score that high as in the outdoor life said. what do you think about the score on that nontyp I think that is the one, from the east side, that was in the mag. Does his name start with a B? Does that fella on the bottom pic have a name starting with a V? Anyway do a lot of typical bucks in reg 3 have problems with the back tine length, it seems a lot of bucks are shy in that area for some reason? Very good photos.

Like I've said before, these are some pics that were floatin around the emails the past few years.

Caveman,
I know of the brothers. The way I understand, they are hard-core and their bucks are hard earned. Definately a couple of whopper bucks no doubt.

Jelvis,
Which Nontypical are you talking about? I posted up more than 1 NT. ;)

For your info, this one was taken by a kelowna guy, he got it near castlegar while elk hunting. I ran a tape over it and got 226 net N/T. His wife also shot a nice 5 point along side of it. They were quadding!!!

Alpine,
I'm certain his trophy room is very impressive. I've seen pics of some other bucks he's killed. All one has to do is glance through the BC BOOK and see his or his dad's name in almost every catagory.

We all keep our secrets for good reason right Steve, but I know several of these are Clearwater bucks. But there are places holding bucks like some of these everywhere but it's the guy that gets back to where they are held up that gets them in the end. So before everyone loads up and heads to Clearwater to find the buck of a lifetime maybe they want to get to know their own backyards and find the big one that hides there.

Funny that people think Big Bucks live behind every tree here, yet, they don't consider how big of an area the term 'Clearwater' covers. It is like looking through the BC Book and seeing the term 'Williams Lake' over and over again and thinking all those bucks are killed close to town.
There are indeed some monsters that live here, finding them takes a lot of time and effort and hard work, which I know several of the hunters in the pics I posted know all to well. I've stated over and over again, the best way to kill a monster is to hunt your own backyard. Dashing willy nilly around the province chasing rumors of the latest big buck that was killed does no good. The fact is, those big bucks are DEAD now. To kill a monster you need to find them when they are ALIVE.

Jelvis,
When I was a kid, my ol' man had a tshirt that said, "Honest Hunters Bullshit. Good Hunters Lie." I think that statement sums it up well. Kirt Darner said that he could tell someone the exact spot where he saw a Giant and they wouldn't believe him anyways. That is the fun of it. I can lie and I can tell the truth and most won't believe a single thing I say.

The problem with the Island or Lower Mainland Hunters is they drive past some amazing Big Buck Country to chase the rumors. There is a ton of great bucks living closer than they know. But, it's more fun jamming into an area with a zillion other hunters ain't it? I guess if you are used to fighting bumper to bumper in traffic everyday, you want the same for your hunting areas.

Jelvis,
You've hit the nail on the head. People on here bitch and moan about how expensive hunting is. One guy just recently stated how you need a 40 Thousand dollar vehicle to hunt. Do you need a fancy pimped out 4x4 to park just off the pavement? No you don't. You might want a good pair of leather boots and a good meat hauling pack, but those are a hell of a lot cheaper than fancy 4x4's loaded up with quads and all the bling now ain't they? The fact is, pick any ridgeline above the pavement off the majority of the highways in the southern Interior and you will be in the big bucks. It is all in what you want though. Do you want the Image or do you want the Real Thing? If one ain't willing to burn some boot rubber, one probably will never see the bucks that guys like you and I see on a regular basis. I've stated before that I've hunted with my old 82 Ford Grenada car many a times. Bought that car for a total of $500 and drove it for 7 years. Shot a 190 class 10x4 triple dropper and packed it back to the car. I threw the pack full of meat in the backseat along with the kid's car seats.

i agree. My $4000 minivan works great as a hunting vehicle. I get some weird looks when im driving up some deactivated roads, and I do have to take it slow... Ive already lost a few oilpans and broken some front suspension, but I also have taken my van where people would be worried about taking atvs lol.
People are lazy. people also want the best there is because they think its required. Its a lot easier to make do with what you have. A lot cheaper too!

The blood stains in the back of the van are a little creepy though haha. Friends call my van the bunny bustin death mobile haha. The name comes from going grouse and bunny hunting with it. Some days there would be 100 or so shot shotshells and piles of blood, fur and feathers in the van lol. I still clean out .22 casings from every pocket and crack!

I have stratagized my Mule deer scouting for this year, living in the lower main land I have little opurtunity to get out & scout so instead of trying to find a needle in a hay stack I have placed tracking devices on Dana, Mark's and Cavemans trucks . "The honey hole", yes all my amatuer hunting friends think that I have a magical spot somewhere where the huge bucks stand around waiting for me to come and get em. The truth is that spot changes every year, all of my bigger bucks have come from different spots and areas. As well, I put alot of time into it, throughout the season and work pretty hard at it every year! (oh ya and I sweep my vehicles for tracking devices )

I guess it all boils down to Lookin Like A Hunter or Being A Hunter eh???? If you are all about the Bling and the Show, you might as well drive through a puddle or 2 and then go drive the Kelowna Strip. I actually watched some guys do that one time. I was shed hunting and glassed these guys driving back and forth through a inch deep puddle. Then later that night, saw them driving back and forth down the strip. Cool guys eh?

Who's got the bigger bucks lets see the pics, walking or driving?

The biggest muley buck I have ever seen was right in front of the hood of my dad's truck...we had just had lunch after hiking all morning and only seeing does...started the truck, drove around the first corner, and there he was 30 feet in front of us on the road. Score - maybe 210 - 220?

I can still see him bouncing over the bank as I bailed out of the truck...no shot. Great memory though.

Jelly man, I got lots of spots I hunt every year. I used to live in 100 mile so I find myself checking out my old spots in region 5 and 3. Here in kelowna ive got a few areas I play in, sometimes do some exploring of new ground, but when it come down to closing day, I always find myself in my all time best spots. I often drop my standards a bit on closing day too, hence at least half of my bucks have been closing day bucks!

Ya done good Mark! And a Polaris too...perfect!

Big bucks are where ya find 'em. Sometimes they surprise you where they turn up. I do have one honey-hole mountain where I've seen a few dandies up high, so I tend to put some time in up there. But, they bail out of there by the second/third week of the season and disappear into the thickets below. And since it closes before the rut here, they are pretty safe.

Hunting alot does not mean success Jel. By no means would I say I am a successful hunter, Ive never taken above a 177. Doing research, reading, studying maps, listening and following genetics have proved to work. Get out of a truck or off a quad, and your chances will rise immesly. I know several guys who get our at least 5 times as much as I do, yet have trouble evening finidng a four point.

Your definatley on the right track Jelvis. Thanks for the congrats on my buck, dont get me wrong I am proud of him but fully expect to take a booner one day. When I say follow genetics take it with a grain of salt - if somebody shot a monster muley in a particular area dont go looking there necessarily, as he is now dead. If year after year different people take monsters from an area, focus your hunt in that area then use the many different tips people have given you here and focus on one spot. In the same breath, dont get overly obsessed with one area exclusively. IMHO, a good area is an area that you dont see others in.

Best of luck - if you dont mind me asking, which region do you focus on?

hunter1947, you love to hunt rocky mt mulies too? You must like hiking too? Do you see nice bucks when your elk hunting? I see your going to try a whloe new area and that sounds like an adventure for sure, I guess you're hoping for a LEH or hunting six pointers? Sounds exciting anyway your able to hunt, have you hunted Kamloops area? Jel
Yes i do hunt mulies ,but most of the time i am hunting elk when i see the mulies and whitetail deer ,i could have taken some big mule deer when i was hunting elk at times ,but had to cancel on it ,would have ruined my elk stalk. The only place around the kamloops are was up deadman's creek road area ,took some nice bucks out of there in the late 60ties early 70ties. And no i don't worry about getting nothing in a new area ,to me it is corked up as a new scouting area and if it pays off all the better for me. ,well i have to hit Mt Finlayson for my hike now ,boy it sure gets harder every year to keep in shape when you get to be my age http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif.

Kirk darner was kicked out of the B&C many years ago because he was entering trophy muley's that he had bought and said he shot them!

There was a couple that were harvested before he was born, he got caught when some one noticed a picture of a monster Non typical muley in a 1951 argosy magazine that he said he shot in the late seventy's, at that time he was investigated by the B&C, and found out to be another wildlife crook.

Jelvis,
Here's why I hunt with young punks like steveo. Sure is alot easier on the old guy to watch someone else drag out your buck for ya. 8)

I'll say. Steveo helped me pack out my buck the next day after shooting him when he could be out hunting.......but I think its because I was in on that double dropper he shot the year before  and evened things up.

I believe we're still looking for someone to undertake camp duties this coming season while we're out hunting: fire starter, cook, dish washer etc.

Fire dana a PM if you're interested. He will handle all your inquiries.

I just read this whole thread again. It's a good read. Lots of good, ground level, ethics and hard workin guys on here. I'd be lying if I said I was envious of the opportunity everyone has over there for big bucks.
I too put off shooting a buck til the very end, if at all. I hunt to be out there, and seeing a hog is just the possibility of an added bonus.
At the end of the day I'm lucky to find a buck that goes 110", not 190" lol. Definitely no droppers, kickers and stickers on these blacktails but the thought never leaves my mind.
Big time kudos to the guys who have those hammer mulie holes that worked for them and post these pics and stories, and also for reminding people you dont NEED all that crap to score big on a big ol buck. Yes it's a luxury to have, but the deer dont care.
Nice bucks Jelvis, Dana, SteveO, MattB.

Awesome photo, My old buddy who moved to nelson bc, hang glided off speargrass on Mt Peter in Kamloops I drove his truck down to mt paul golf course, I saw deer up there, then at deadman he flew off at Sabaston cr, in hunting season and could hear guys shooting below, deer all over de place, deer everywhere in the kammy area, lets keep those photos coming. Any hunting photos from Kamloops area and the Clearwater, Adams Lake, especially 3:38, 3:41,3:37 and 3:42 Fantastic spots for MULIES. Any pictures of Gannet Lake, Tsikwustum Lake would be valued cause thats where a bunch of guys are going from Kammy this year into the DUDGEON area, see ya there. Photos please of these and other areas as mentioned in the second last post reply, I'm taking my new digital Pentax up there. Jel

Hey Jello;

He's not the monster such as others have posted but he IS my 2nd in a lifetime buck. I plan on getting the once in a lifetime dream, in a couple more months.

All that I can say is that he lived in one of them areas that you're interested in and that I got him late October, 2006.

As you can tell from the bags under my eyes, he WAS a PITA! Not only was the hunt a ball-breaker but the hump out was horrific. That's some REAL nasty terrain up there. This pic was shot some 10 hours after the trigger was pulled and it was only a 45 minute drive to get it to my friends place.

I'm still waiting for the mount and he hasn't been officialy scored yet - Sometimes it's just better not knowing.

This buck here was taken in an area that has extremeley high hunting pressure. I usually don't like hunting in those situations but I knew there was some good bucks in there. Most of the people road hunt in there and truth be told I have seen a dozen vehicles in a very small area before. Pretty amazing what the timber strips can hold with that many people around.

Dana are heading back into 7-2 this year for the opener.

This one I pulled out of a HEAVILY hunted area, alongside the Coq. in region 2 (hey, it's on the WAY to Kammy, right?) Again, super rugged terrain and LOTS of climbing in order to get away from it all.

I'd have to look at the tag but IIRC it was Oct 31/07. (last year also).

Islandeer hey I think he's back on if you look in his avatar it doesn't say banned anymore. Probably will eventually be on hopefully but thats up to him. Kamloops hunting in 2008 season should be good with all the fires that happened and the logged out beetle killed areas. The big Mclure fire was in 2003 so five and a half years has passed this summer and it takes five and a half years for a buck to reach trophy size, so any buck that was a forker in 2003 will be in the heavy weight division lol. This season Gotta go all out. Jelly Non Typical.

Yes, Jelvis how true. As I sit at my flytying bench and look across Tunkwa I can see the new slashes getting bigger and bigger in the hills. The one they're logging presently used to hide quite a population of moose. I hope they survive the summer hunting season!

If you think about it...really think about it most of BC was treeless at one time or even several times....even in recent history they have reported that most of the north Thompson burned pretty much from one big fire.
Just this past week my dad and I were messing with a cougar track and discovered that back in where we were was an old road.....this pretty untouched place(or so it seemed) was not. It had been logged in the 60's.
I remember years ago disovering the that the exact fir ridge that I had hunted and taken a really nice buck was a logging slash....and I took a real nice buck there in the slash that year. 13 years later you cannot even see into anymore.
Same as a trophy lake up here....they have logged up to the very edge due to the pine beetle......looks like shit except when I was climbing a fir ridge years before above the lake....I found it had already been logged to the edge once before..the whole reason why there was a road into it in the first place.
Like the big fires....people crying how ugly they were. Crap I could not believe how beautiful it was...how fertile it became and that is exactly where by boy shot his nice buck.....20 years from now my grandkids will be hunting deer there also.
A friend of mine....while we were shoeing horses...was telling about the big Dollies he had caught up by my place on the weekend. "Big Dollies, where?" Wade told me and how and damn if I didn't catch a lunker just 10 minutes from my house.15 pounds!
For years that I lived here I had never even know they were there!
Which is my point......lot's of things are going on all the time that the majority never see and never know. Knowledge of how and where to look can change a perspective........Did anybody see that cow and calf moose at fishtrap last year in the burn??? they were right there up on the hill for weeks. Did you know there are mnt Goats in Little Fort?, Where are the big Blue grouse? Did the burns help them??? Damn straight they did!
Change is good!!!!

Good post. Amazing the potential to be discovered when a guy just goes out and covers some ground via leg work. I have found more hidden gem spots more times than I can count by going into an area that looks like "a waste of time" or "crappy" only to find something I'd never imagine, like a hidden stand of old growth or major traverse routes with big buck sign.

The size and the shape of the antlers depends on food, age and heredity. You are what you eat and so is a deer. The number of points or tines on a bucks antlers may vary in number as well as the racks weight depending on what the deer ate that year. Feeding on rich farmland soil or on poor soil in dry thick pines makes a big difference. Heredity is important it gives the shape and number of points and the diet their size.
The Rocky Mountain Mule Deer can have truly abnormal racks. They are classed "Non-Typical," because they have oddly shaped or oddly placed points. Antlers start to grow in April and fawns are born in May and June. The antlers are fully grown in late August. Then polishing begins in late August or early September. The antlers drop off in January. Buck fawns that are castrated develop no antlers. Question? If so many antlers fall off how come so few are found?
One reason theres not that many bucks in a given area and lots of ground per antler. The trick, find where deer winter because thats when they drop antlers off, in winter. Jel rack

Hey Jelvis, there's a particular patch of timber I've been hunting and have had a groundblind there for four years. I found a seven point whitey shed this year that was 90% buried for at least 5 years and all the hours I've spent in that blind and never saw that horn. I can only imagine how many sheds I have walked by or over during hunting/ scouting hikes.

How about this johnk a fella I know, (Ricky) was hunting the Nor river side hills with his buddy and as they were walking along the friend in front stepped over some dead limbs, and Ricky who was behind him saw the 170 inch mule deer rack of a dead buck still intact on the skull, his buddy never even realized it, he stepped that close to it. Some times you see them most of the time, you don't. Jel look

Same thing happened to me one day.....I look down and see a nice 2 pt partly burried, I reach down to pick it up and it wont budge WTH....as I start to loosen it up I start to see the other tines moving, the 2 pt was the G1 and a sticker on one side of a monster 6X6 with junk that got hit by a vehicle, the skull was intact but it was pretty badly chewed up and green with age.

Truth is stranger than fiction my friend. A little tune about hunting the region around Kamloops especially for mule deer and moose. Sing to the tune of The Gambler, by Kenny Rodgers. Huntings a gamble sometimes.
Ok here we go. The Hunter, sung to The Gambler.
On a dark autumn evening I drove---north of Kammy
Lookin for a spike/fork I knew where to drive
October 11th I saw a little swamp donkey
I couldn't tell if it was a two or a three , then I remembered.
You gotta know when to hold off
Know when to hold on
Know when to let it walk
Know when to run
You never count your immy's
When your sitting in the Jimmy
There will be time to do your counting
Before the dealings done.
You gotta know when to blast um.

I don't see hide, I see 2 distinct skullplates. Maybe the one is cracked and you are trying the re-enforce it with one underneath???

looks like replica antlers placed on a skull. He probably bought them off e-bay:-D

Very nice buck but I doubt it would reach 200. Some of the tines are quite short without much mass to them. I think that buck would be closer to 175-180. Nonetheless thats a beauty you have there.

Jellybean,
Again I ask, what's up with the 2 skull plates? You trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes? Are those sheds mounted on a homemade skullplate???? And I thought Rocko was your cousin. So are you saying this is Rocko Jocko's buck? If you didn't want the tuff questions you should have let this thread die years ago.
