Went for an early morning hunt with my son, Josh, today. Took a trip up King Eddy, because it's close, normally don't hunt up there on the weekends because of the traffic, but I needed to be home by 3, so that was my only real choice. As some of you may remember, most of my hunting commute is done in a mini van, so I usually park near side trails and hoof it. Today was no different, parked at the front of a road to an old cut block and we headed in for a look see. When we got to the edge of the but block, I started glassing anywhere I thought a mulie would blend and ended up setting them to rest on this guy. I would have passed him up if my son hadn't been with me, it was a 330 yard shot, uphill grade and a LOT of slash. Unfortunately, I looked down to see Josh smiling and looking at me with his hands over his ears. LOL. Had no choice at that point, took the shot and the bugger ran another 120 yards, FURTHER UP THE HILL! Sigh, rifle over the shoulder, off we went, Josh happily bouncing beside me. When it was all said and done, I had to drag the thing almost 500 yards down the hill over dead falls and old slash pile, up a knoll, then another 500 or 600 yards uphill to the van. Have to remember to go back later and pick up my lungs. LOL But, Josh was happy and we'll have pepperoni soon enough. Here's a couple of shots.

Josh looks like a very, very happy boy. I am sure he was thrilled to be there with dad and experience the hunt.
Undoubtedly a memory he will never forget!
Good on both of you!

Thanks guys, Josh has been trailing me on hunts a while now, he's already saving for a .243. I'm planning on boiling and bleaching the skull for him, I think. Is beetle cleaning still offered here? If so, how much and who do I contact?

I hope my daughter looks that happy when I take her out for a hunt. How old is your boy, and when did you start bringing him? My daughters 4.5 now and I'm hoping next year she can come for some day drives.. He is one happy boy, I bet you are 10ft taller to him now.

Bring them when ever you feel the time is right. Just have patience and make the trip more about them. I brought both my kids at the same time when my son was 5, my daughter was 4 (just days into). They both had fun, my daughter is actually the one way more keen on hunting now. Always asking if we can go, he's more if your going sure I'll go.

As J-Man said, start taking them out early. Just when their really young, keep it short and don't expect too much, they like to talk, explore and to be constantly entertained. I started taking Josh out a little later than 4, because I started hunting again later too. I think I started taking them out when he was 8, was a little easier at that age. He had more staying and it held his interest longer in it's own rite. I have two girls as well, one never really had any interest in hunting, my older one was interested until 13, then she became a girlly girl over night and broke my heart just as quick. LOL

I liked the fact that you still go out even though you don't have a p/u. I got mocked for going out hunting back in the early 80s with my 78 VW rabbit. When I came home with 2 deer in the back everybody kinda shut up.
Nice Bear.
