Just came back from Golden. Went there a week ago with my hubby and our three daughters on a fishing and grouse hunt. Came home with three ruffled which is pretty lousy.
My husband and I have hunted there years ago and came home with up to 10 grouse...both spruce and ruffled. I think the our lousy spring has killed lots of them since we hardly saw grouse at all.
Our next years grouse hunt will be somewhere else....we'll leave Golden to repopulate their grouse numbers.

I am at zero, he ran into some thick bushes so I threw a stick to flush him and and he came right at me. Tried to get off a shot at 2 yards but missed. Kind of glad I missed cause I don't think there would have been much left at that range.

I've taken 6 so far 3 Blues, 2 Ruffies and a Spruce. All on the wing. I have been flushing and seeing way more than I thought I would after this spring but they have been good at putting cover between them and the gun. Hoping to get out tomorrow so we will see what that brings.

Season is off to a good start. Got 5 ruffed opening weekend in 3-18, and 7 more this last weekend. it was my wife's first grouse hunt and we had a great time.
Only my second season, and this was the first time I've seen more than 2 birds together in one spot. We shot 4 ruffed within 5 min. Lots of fun

The wife and I are up to about between 30 and 35. We both had are limits within an hour the first night out. The dogs have been having a good time and we brought our 2 month old baby boy, Carter along for his first trips. I love family bird hunts.

Brought home a mix of spuce and ruffed...dozen in total, ate 6 in camp
had a couple of real sweet shootouts. The old single shot cooey was working great.
We actually came across a couple of mixed coveys, somethng I haven't seen for years.
Last two coveys that we ran into on our last day must have been a 2nd hatch as they were tiny compared to the rest, and just stuffed full of grasshoppers.
Pretty cool actually

Ive only seen a few this year so far but I wasnt targeting them, numbers seem to be down from last year, it must have been the harsh spring

Brought home a dozen of both spruce and ruffed.
Ate another half dozen in camp, actually had some wseet shootouts, buddy with the 410 and me with the trusty old single shot cooey. must say the cooey was bang on.
Actually ran into a couple of mixed coveys, something I havent seen for awhile.
Also, the last couple of coveys were tiny compared to some of the birds so must have been a 2nd hatch. One set was stuffed full of grasshoppers which was pretty cool.
We were also on the chase one sunny afternoon on a real spooky covey of ruffed that were running all over. Momma started calling them and they were running everywhere, picked a couple off as we ran back n forth from both sides of the road...as we drove away they were still running back n forth it was pretty funny.

Spent 3 hours in 3-26 hiking and driving on Sat. Saw nothing. Hiked for 3 hrs in 8-6 this morning and again saw nothing. All weekend we saw 6 squirrels and a robin. My son is wondering if he'll have to buy his first grouse! ;-)

On my last hunt I wanted to try for some grouse. I shot 1 blue grouse. The other grouse they were gone to fast. I quess the wolf tracks we saw were making the grouse nervous.

Wife & I hunted hard October & November. Grand Forks (North Fork Granby River) to Jewel Lake for 4 days - seen 10 or 15 - shot 2.

4 days hunting Christian Valley, Beverdell and Big White to Kelowna - a lot of FSRs. less that 5 seen, none shot.

1 day around Hope-Princeton near Princeton with a dog. Didn't bounce a single grouse

5 days total out of Qualicum Beach didn't see 1 grouse.

All these areas have been good grouse areas in the past. This is worse than last year and last year was what I thought was the worst I ever experienced. I sure hope we get a good Spring in 2012 favorable to the chicks. 2009 was a bumper year.

Sure did see a lot of coyotes though.
